Anderson Silva vs. Derek Brunson added to UFC 208

The UFC is about to kick of 2017 with one of their biggest stars, BJ Penn, making his return to the octagon. Another one of the marquee names in the promotion’s history, Anderson Silva, has just been asked to put the gloves on as well.

Anderson “The Spider” Silva will take on Derek Brunson at UFC 209 in Brooklyn. The card, headlined by the inaugural women’s featherweight title match between Holly Holm and Germaine de Radamie, has been under fire a bit for its lack of star power. Well apparently the UFC brass heard the fans loud and clear.

Silva, a former UFC middleweight champion, has had a tough go of it as of late. He is in the midst of a 4-fight losing streak, including one “No Contest” after his decision win over Nick Diaz was overturned when”The Spider” tested positive for a banned substance following the fight.

His four losses, however, came against some of the division’s best. Chris Weidman (twice), Michael Bisping, and Daniel Cormier have notched wins over Silva. Prior to his current skid, Anderson made himself a legendary fighter by racking up a 17-fight win streak that stretched over 6 years and 10 title defenses.

Derek Brunson (16-4) is coming off of a TKO loss to Robert Whitaker this past November after having won 5 straight. A win over a legend like Silva would be huge for Brunson at this point in his career.

For Silva, another loss could further signal the potential decline of one of the sport’s greatest fighters. The middleweight title picture is pretty hefty right now with Weidman, Luke Rockhold, Yoel Romero, and Jacare Souza all lurking, but you can’t totally rule out putting Silva in the picture if he wins.

Not because of the win necessarily, but because he’s Anderson Silva and his name alone in a title match, if he looks good in this fight, will be enough to move the needle.

It all goes down February 11th from Brooklyn, New York.
