Last night at UFC Fight Night 103, Yair Rodriguez scored a huge win over UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn, but that wasn’t the only notable win of the night. Nina Ansaroff earned her first UFC victory with a submission victory during the prelims.
Ansaroff faced Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger in a strawweight battle of two somewhat up and comers. Both came into the match on 2-fight losing streaks and were desperately needing to break that skid to put their careers on the right path.
Nina (7-5) became the first fighter to defeat Jones-Lybarger by submission or KO when she sunk in a rear-naked choke late in the third round. It was a dominant performance by Ansaroff and it looks as though training with her girlfriend, UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, is paying dividends.
6 of Nina’s 7 victories have come by way of submission or KO, with her first professional fight being her only win by decision. On the flip side, 4 of her 5 losses have come by decision, with one of them being a split decision loss. So if there’s one thing those stats dictate, it’s that Nina is very much a fighter, and one that’s hard to put down.
When the new rankings come out it is unsure whether or not the win will put her inot the top 15, but a few more nice wins could put her in the top 10. Nunes has made herself clear in wanting to go after the UFC women’s featherweight title. Can we possibly imagine a scenario where Ansaroff is the champion of the strawweight division and Nunes is a two-weight champion at bantam and feather? Talk about an MMA power couple.
Congrats again to Nina Ansaroff on her first victory inside the octagon, we know how big of a moment that is in a fighter’s career.
