MikeSwick.com's Best of the Year: 2016

In short, 2016 could have been better. MMA saw the unfortunate and unnecessary passing of some good people. The UFC was sold by Zuffa. Conor McGregor got bigger. USADA made people get smaller. We surveyed the staff of MikeSwick.com on their picks for all of the best (and worst) of 2016. Fight of the Year … Read moreMikeSwick.com’s Best of the Year: 2016

Idris Elba: Fighter. Trailer for his documentary on becoming a pro kickboxer

Idris Elba: Fighter. Trailer for his documentary on becoming a pro kickboxer

You may or may not have known that Idris Elba was in a fight. I know what you are thinking,

“Sure I saw him fight. He played Heimdall in Thor and was guardian of the Bifrost Rainbow Bridge in Asgard. He fought people all the time!”

OK, maybe that wasn’t what you were thinking, because you’re not totally pathetic like I am.

Late in October 2016, a video surfaced of Idris Elba participating in a professional kickboxing match. Madonna posted it to her Instagram for the world to see. Yes, that Madonna. It was news for a quick second, before people moved on. I’m sure they had to talk about Conor McGregor being spotted buying eggs or something.

Today, the Discovery Channel posted the trailer for Idris Elba: Fighter and it looks awesome. The pixelated little video from Madonna’s iphone was simply the fight itself. The Discovery Channel filmed a year long documentary that focused on Elba’s training, as well as his journey. Discovery UK describes the show:

“In the brand new series, IDRIS ELBA: FIGHTER, Elba will undertake the most demanding experience of his career – training to become a professional kickboxer and ultimately compete against a seasoned fighter in a no-holds-barred bout.

Shot on location in Great Britain, Cuba, Japan, South Africa and Thailand, this is no act. There is no script. This fight is real as are the potential repercussions.”

It’s always fascinating to see the common man take on such extraordinary challenges. The actor, DJ, musician, and now FIGHTER, Idris Elba is that man.

To learn more about the show that will air in 3 parts, starting on January 17 go to Discovery UK.

Colin Cowherd: “20 years from now, Rousey won’t be 1 of their 30 best fighters ever”

20 years from now, Rousey won't be 1 of their 30 best fighters ever

The bandwagon on the Ronda Rousey hate train is getting fuller by the second. It’s incredible how many people don’t seem to understand how good of a fighter Ronda Rousey is. I understand that it’s difficult to grasp things that you aren’t familiar with. Ronda Rousey’s last 2 fights have made her look mortal and the people who hate her, love it. Whether or not FOX Sport’s Colin Cowherd hates her remains to be seen. Cowherd sure isn’t a believer though.

He tries to state his case that the UFC is still in it’s infancy, despite being around for 25 years. In this embryonic stage of the organization that Cowherd feels is so rapidly changing, there will be no place for today’s stars in the future. Therefore, when we look back on those we once heralded, they will be nothing more than footnotes.

If Ronda retired today, she will go down as one of the top female fighters in history. What she did in MMA against champions was incredible. Not only did she beat her opponents, she broke them. You knew what she was going to do and she still broke your arm. Simply brushing off her career as if it was nothing short of spectacular is insulting.

“20 years from now, Rousey won’t be 1 of their 30 best fighters ever”

This may be going a bit over-board there, Colin. It’s like saying Chuck Liddell isn’t one of the top light-heavyweights of all time because he fought longer than he should have.

Ironically the segment wasn’t geared towards Rousey as much as it was Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. The 2 most loved and hated NBA players know how it feels; Getting to the top and falling, then being told you can’t do this or that.

Ronda may be done in MMA, or she could come back. Maybe her time has passed. Only Ronda knows. However, it would be nice to at least acknowledge that when Ronda was competing, she was the greatest female fighter on the planet.

Cub Swanson vs Max Holloway 2? Yes please.

Max Holloway knows the drill. Yes you can want a fight with Jose Aldo, but that doesn’t always mean you are going to get it. Jose Aldo has a way of getting hurt at the most inopportune times. Khabib Nurmagomedov is never at a loss for words. Ever. Not even when he’s fighting. In his last fight with Michael Johnson, he was talking while punching. For all the talking Khabib does, his fighting is even scarier. He wants that UFC Lightweight Title and he wants it right now. UFC 207: Post fight press conference. Nunes, Cruz, Dillashaw, Garbrandt

UFC 207: Post fight press conference. Nunes, Cruz, Dillashaw, Garbrandt

Amanda Nunes,Dominick Cruz, TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt all spoke at the UFC 207 post fight presser.

Dominick Cruz

Dominick Cruz came out and spoke with humility and grace in losing to Cody Garbrandt. He’s always maintained that the sport of MMA doesn’t define him, it’s just his chosen profession. He definitely has a firm grasp on what life is about. He understands fighting and understands that LIFE is more important. However, Cruz made sure to let everyone know that he is still in the title picture. It looks as if we will see Dillashaw, Cruz, and Garbrandt all doing the dance for a while in the 135 pound division.

“There wasn’t 1 second of that fight that I wasn’t trying to win”

Cody Garbrandt

Cody Garbrandt showed up looking sharp in his suit and his new belt. Garbrandt said the fight, “Played out exactly how I thought it was going to”. When asked about if TJ Dillashaw was next for the title.

“I had so much fun in there, let’s give Dom an immediate rematch, but it’s ultimately up to the UFC”

“I’m the baddest dude in the world. Bring em all.”

Garbrandt also got very emotional when talking about his young friend Maddux. Winning the belt for Maddux seemed to be more important to Garbrandt than winning it for himself.

TJ Dillashaw

Dillashaw looked like he hadn’t fought the hardest hitting bantamweight in the world an hour previous. He beat up John Lineker for 15 minutes and looks like he’s ready to fight tomorrow. He addressed the elephant in the room: Cody Garbrandt. TJ felt that it would be a good backstory selling the Alpha Male drama for a potential fight. He spoke about Dominick Cruz and felt he may have been injured, because he looked really stiff. Ultimately, TJ wants his belt back. That really seemed to be all Dillashaw was concerned with.

Amanda Nunes

MMA media sample question: “Enough about Ronda, Amanda. Let’s talk about Ronda.”

Ugh. Amanda Nunes was a sport in her post-fight interviews, entertaining the ridiculous questions aimed at her by “journalists”. Nunes really was really letting her personality show though. She certainly thought Edmond Tarverdyan was poisoning Ronda into thinking she was a boxer. It wasn’t that long ago that Nunes couldn’t even speak English and now she is running post-fight pressers. She was very happy that she even got the fight with Ronda and said she asked Dana White for it. Nunes did offer her thoughts on what she thought was next for Ronda Rousey.

“That’s it for her. For sure she’s going to retire”
