Johny Hendricks: Back to his roots (video)

Johny Hedricks Back To Roots

You’d never know it, but Johny Hendricks has Native American blood in him. Hendricks is part of the Otoe Tribe and his great great grandfather was an Otoe Missouri Tribal chief. Because of his UFC accomplishments, Hendricks has had a real impact on the Otoe.

Hendricks seems to have embraced his role as an ambassador of the tribe. It appears that he’s especially proud of teaching the Otoe youth and showing himself to be a positive role model for the kids.

The video that the UFC has recently posted about Johny’s place in the tribe reveals how much the members gravitate to him. They look at Hendricks as a superstar and are proud of his Octagon accomplishments.

The prerequisites for tribal membership are taken very seriously. The Otoe look to be more than content with Johny and the good he is doing in their name.

Urijah Faber on Paige VanZant after her loss.

Urijah Faber is the head of Team Alpha Male for a reason. Aside from creating it, Faber has been the leader of the team for years. Just days after his retirement, Urijah is already in coach mode. He addressed the career of Paige VanZant, after her tough loss to Michelle Waterson.

“There’s no one that works harder than her when she’s in the gym. The problem is, she is being yanked in all these other directions. It’s not necessarily her fault, though. She’s 22 and she’s in this new role (being a mainstream star) and she’s  doing her best to juggle things. We’d love to see more of her in the gym, when she’s not in fight camp. But she’s got all these obligations and there’s money dropping in her bucket and those are opportunities that may go away. You never know.”

Call it being a good leader, but Urijah has always had a big brother mentality with the fighters in his stable.

As soon as  a fighter loses, people love to jump on the hate bandwagon and offer their negative opinion. Faber keeps it in perspective though. He’s basically saying, we’d love to see you in the gym more often, but we totally understand doing other things for your career. Those opportunities may be gone tomorrow, so go after them while you can.

Cain Velasquez: Ultimate 8 moments.

Cain Velasquez has only fought 6 times in the past 5 years. Fans have a very short memory when a fighter isn’t consistently performing inside the Octagon. The UFC posted a video of Cain Velasquez showcasing his Ultimate 8 Moments. While watching it I realized that I forgot what an absolute savage he is.

I remember a photographer friend of mine was in San Jose shooting at AKA. This was in 2007 and Cain wasn’t even in the UFC. I got the text later that evening.

“There is a heavyweight up here with better cardio than the lightweights. He’s absolutely KILLING everyone.”

Take a wild guess who it was?

Enjoy, Cain Velasquez: Ultimate 8 Moments.

Michelle Waterson: Either Rose or Carla would lead to an interesting fight

Calling girls out isn’t Michelle Waterson’s style. After her stellar victory at UFC on FOX over Paige VanZant, she has been bombarded with questions regarding who is next.  She’s asking for anyone in the top 5, but narrowed it down to 2 girls in a recent interview with tmz sports.

Michelle Waterson: “I’ll narrow it down to 2 girls. I have ultimate respect for both ladies and I think both of them will be great fights… If they don’t give me Joanna Jedrzeczyk first, It will either be Rose (Namajunas) or Carla (Esparza). I think both of those ladies would be an interesting fight.”

Either of those fights makes sense for the Michelle Waterson. She’s been in fighting for close to 10 a decade and she just broke through the mainstream bubble. Strike when the iron is hot, as they say.

Waterson also addresses other subjects in her interview. She talks about being congratulated by Paige VanZant backstage after their fight, as well as crossing over and participating in things that are more mainstream.
