BREAKING: Josh Barnett informed of potential USADA violation

BREAKING: Josh Barnett informed of potential USADA violation

2016 has quickly become known as the year where we’ve lost a lot of names. In the world of mixed martial arts it is quickly becoming known as the year where the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) made it’s presence felt. Today USADA notified former UFC heavyweight champion and Pancrase open weight champion Josh Barnett of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection on December 9, 2016.

It should be noted, that in many cases a notification does not equal guilt of any violations. There is a very fine line when it comes to USADA in terms of what can constitute a positive test result or a violation. Many supplements sold at your local GNC can very well result in a positive test, or in the case of Lyoto Machida, a negative test combined with mentioning you may have taken something can result in a suspension.

No word yet on what the sample showed that resulted in the notification but stay locked to MikeSwick.com as we continue to report on the situation. Additionally, UFC’s immediate statement can be seen below:

“The UFC organization was formally notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Josh Barnett of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection on December 9, 2016.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full fair legal review process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed.

Consistent with all previous potential anti-doping violations, additional information or UFC statements will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.”
