Claudia Gadelha injured her knee prior to her fight with Carla Esparza at UFC 225
Claudia Gadelha injured her knee prior to her UFC 225 split decision victory over Carla Esparza. Initially wasn’t sure that she’d be able to fight, but she opted to not drop out and bravely fought a back and forth fight with Carla. She indicated that she damaged both her knee and thigh prior to fight during training. Now that the fight is in the books, she’ll head under the knife to repair the damaged knee.
Gadelha spoke to MMA Fighting and relayed the news of the injury saying in part.
“I badly injured my knee, everyone at the UFC (Performance) Institute knows that because I was treated by the institute’s physiotherapist. They (doctor) was the only reason I didn’t pull out of the fight. She said ‘I’ll take care of you.’ I kept visiting the physiotherapist during fight week to be able to fight. I felt the knee in the first round, could barely stand, and still beat Carla in her game, wrestling, so I think she’s just mad she couldn’t outwrestle me.”
Carla was upset and accused Gadelha of greasing during the fight. I doubt that was the case, and there won’t be an immediate rematch as Claudia will have surgery next week. Here’s what she tweeted.
Knee surgery will be next week. Thank you for the real and loved ones!!

We wish Claudia a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back in the cage as soon as possible.
