It’s beginning to look like Daniel Cormier will defend his title on July 29th at UFC 214

In the end, the fight to make had to be Jones and Cormier.

The UFC road show sets up shop in Anaheim, CA on July 29th, and it’s beginning to look a lot like Daniel Cormier will defend his title against Jon Jones on the card.  It would mean that Jon Jones isn’t going for a tune up fight, but rather dive directly into the deep end of the pool.

If you’ll remember, he fought Ovince Saint Preux after his last suspension and looked very rusty in a victory.  A similar performance against DC would not end with Jones’ arm raised in my opinion.  Jones has been inactive due to his suspensions having fought only three times in three years. If he fights in July, he’ll be entering the cage after a 15-monthh layover.

Daniel Cormier has fought twice since Jones has been on the shelf, defeating Anderson Silva and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. This will be the fifth time the UFC has attempted to make this fight and it remains to be seen if and when it’ll happen.

The smart money seems to be on July 29th at UFC 214. Given discipline issues and injuries, I won’t get hyped until they are both locked in the Octagon together.

There’s also the fact to consider that Dana White said he will absolutely not put Jon Jones in another main event.  At least until he proves he can actually stay out of trouble, and make it to the cage. He’s dumped tons of money on promotion of fights that never came to pass.  Daniel Cormier said he’d only play second fiddle to Conor McGregor.  I guess we’ll see what happens as we get closer to UFC 214 in the months to come.
