Demetrious Johnson is the pound for pound best fighter in the world at the moment. He’s dominated everyone that the UFC has put in front of him. He has dispatched half of the top guys in the flyweight division; Some, twice already. The UFC even put together a tournament to see if anyone on Earth could beat him and that didn’t work either. So now, a mouse sits alone on top of the world.
Luckily in the new UFC there is a lot of flexibility. Interim titles and ‘money weight’ fights… Whatever brings in the most money. After Conor McGregor became a 2 division champion, it became the new cool thing to do. If you were around the sport a few years ago, Dana White used to scoff at the idea of super fights. Now, it feels like that is all they are looking for.
Mighty Mouse was interviewed by NESN and like clockwork, he was asked if he’d move up in weight to chase another belt.
“Yeah definitely, if the money’s right. It’s always about the money aspect of it. I need to have an incentive to go up and do it.”
“When you look at the best athletes around the world, a good example is Usain Bolt. He runs the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash every single year at the Olympics. He breaks his own record, but no one ever tells him, ‘Why don’t you run a 400? Why don’t you run a mile? I mean, you’re fast.’ It’s because he’s always focused on his craft, which is trying to beat his record and that’s why I’m trying to do. I’m trying to beat my record. I’m trying to always improve myself, better myself, and trying to beat Anderson Silva’s record.”
So, when will we see Demetrious Johnson fight again?
“Hopefully UFC 211, here in Texas. That’s May 13th. Right now I’m trying to stay healthy and hopefully I can be in the co-main event, behind Stipe and Junior Dos Santos.”
