Demetrious Johnson wins the Best Fighter Award at the ESPY Awards
Mighty Mouse might not be Dana White’s choice, but he took home the hardware nonetheless.
Tonight the ESPY Awards are taking place on Network Television on ABC. It was a good night for Demetrious Johnson. Host Peyton Manning has been pretty funny, and his opening monologue was top notch. The category that is most of interest to us combat sports fans was Best Fighter. The nominees for the award are:
Andre Ward – Boxing
Conor McGregor – MMA
Terrance Crawford – Boxing
Demetrious Johnson – MMA
Gennady Golovkin – Boxing
Last year Conor McGregor took home the award, but this year Demetrious Johnson got the nod. He earned the award, and it’s a pretty telling statement in terms of his being recognized as a name in the industry. There have been a lot of concerns whether or not he had a big enough name to sell PPV events. It doesn’t hurt being told in front of millions of American sports fans, on primetime national television that you’re the best.
Demetrious Johnson also tops our Pound for Pound list.
