Derek Brunson set to face off with Jacare at UFC on FOX 27 in January.
The UFC has announced a pretty interesting fight to headline UFC on FOX 27 in Charlotte this January. Derek Brunson and “Jacare” Souza will fight in a Middleweight bout with title implications. Jacare is currently ranked #5 in the UFC’s Middleweight division and Derek Brunson is currently 7th.
Derek Brunson (18-5) enters the fight having won two consecutive fights over Daniel Kelly and Lyoto Machida. He knocked both opponents out in the first round of their fights. Derek is 9-3 inside the UFC’s Octagon and a victory over Souza would certainly put him in line for a title eliminator.
Jacare Souza (24-5) is coming into this fight after having lost his last outing against Robert Whittaker for the interim Middleweight Title. He was injured in that contest and this is his first fight back since that injury. Jacare is a submission ace who has beaten a ton of top talent at Middleweight. He holds victories over Tim Kennedy, Robbie Lawler, Gegard Mousasi, Vitor Belfort and even Derek Brunson.
That’s right, these two met once before while they were both under the Strikeforce banner. Five years ago Jacare stopped Brunson via TKO in under a minute. So suffice it to say these two have some history.
UFC on FOX 27 takes place January 27th live from Charlotte, NC.
