Derrick Lewis’ retirement was brief, as he looks to be paired with former champion Werdum.
Derrick Lewis (18-5) opted to retire after his loss to Mark Hunt at UFC Fight Night 110. He had been on quite a roll prior to that loss, having won six in a row in the UFC Heavyweight division. Derrick had earned quite a following due to his fan-friendly style of brawling, and knocking out his opponents. His retirement was brief, as he’s ready to step back into the Octagon and mix it up in October. This according to a report by Ariel Hewani.
Fabricio Werdum (21-7) is the former UFC Heavyweight champion but lost his title when he was knocked out by Stipe Miocic at UFC 198. Since that time Werdum has gone 1-1, defeating Travis Browne, but losing to Alistair Overeem. He finds himself in a must win situation here if he wishes to climb back into immediate title contention.
This fight should feature Lewis looking to stand and trade, and Werdum looking to take the fight to the mat. Lewis has been notoriously difficult to keep down, but if Werdum can get him to the mat, Lewis could find himself in deep submission trouble. It’s a classic style vs. style fight and one that should certainly entertain.
