Frankie Edgar: “I’m #2. (Holloway and Aldo) gotta fight. Someone’s gotta lose. That makes me next.”
With his dominant one-sided victory over rising star Yair Rodriguez, Frankie Edgar is already campaigning for the next shot at featherweight gold. Frankie has been one of the most dominant fighters in the UFC for almost a decade. A guy like that is hard to say ‘no’ to, especially after his beat-down of Rodriguez, who was being touted as the next big thing.
Here’s the problem with that… Frankie is 7-2 in his last 9 fights. Both losses were title fights with Jose Aldo where he lost handily. Trying to sell a third fight between the two, when both went to a decision, will be tough for the UFC. As a fan, I really don’t want to watch Aldo and Frankie fight again.
However, if Max Holloway beats Aldo, then Frankie vs Max makes a lot of sense.
Cub Swanson is also knocking on the championship door. Cub just fought Edgar and Holloway. It’s too soon to make those fights again, but if Aldo beats Holloway, Cub vs Aldo makes great business sense.
We will first have to be patient and see how Holloway vs Aldo plays out on June 3rd. Then fans can play faux matchmaker. However, right now, Frankie Edgar makes a very strong case for being next in line.
