Former flyweight title contender, Ian McCall, granted UFC release

Ask and ye shall receive. Ian McCall asked for his UFC release and the UFC obliged. I can’t in good faith say that no one saw this coming. It seems like Ian has had one foot out of the door for a while now. With all of his recent health issues, fighting again didn’t seem like it was in his immediate future.

McCall hasn’t fought since UFC 183, in January of 2015. Since then, his next four scheduled fights fell through and he’s been in and out of doctor offices. McCall has openly stated that he has brain trauma from fighting and has looked elsewhere for employment. He joined the Habit/CBD team and has been helping with promotion of their products.

McCall wasn’t exactly thrilled with his pay in the UFC and without NEEDING them, he asked for an out. Today on the MMA Hour he told Ariel Helwani,

“I’m a free agent now. If I’m gonna fight, I want to fight for at least $100,000.”

McCall has seen a lot of interest in his services overseas and in other organizations. Good for him to see the bigger picture and realize the UFC isn’t the end-all, be-all.
