It was a very entertaining fight card in Halifax this evening, which saw some great action. The main card was on point and one of the better ones that we have seen in 2017.
FS1 Main Card
Derrick Lewis vs Travis Browne
Browne dominated the first round and hurt Lewis to the body. He was killing Lewis and even had him turn his back and run at one point. Lewis regained his composure in the second round and turned the tables on Browne. It got ugly when Mario Yamasaki was standing right over Browne’s unconscious body and let him eat a few extra shots. It was so bad, Dana White even tweeted that Mazzagatti sucks. Yes, that really happened. Then Lewis nonchalantly called out Browne on his domestic violence over the mic. It was a crazy few minutes there at the end.
Johny Hendricks vs Hector Lombard
Both Lombard and Hendricks moved up to 185 and both were very cautious with their energy. The story of the fight was Lombard’s heavy hands and Hendrick’s high knees. It looked even going into round three and each looked like they were trying to conserve their energy for that round. Hendricks managed his the best and got stronger as the fight went on. He put it on Lombard until the final bell rang. That is three straight losses for Lombard.
Johny Hendricks def. Hector Lombard- Unanimous Decision 30-27 x2, 29-28
Sam Sicilia vs. Gavin Tucker
Gavin Tucker rolls into this fight at 9-0 and the hometown guy against Sicilia. Sicilia looked like he was sitting back for most of the fight like he was just waiting to uncork that big right hand. Tucker danced and used angles; Seemingly landing everything he threw. He dominated from bell to bell against the veteran Sicilia.
Gavin Tucker def. Sam Sicilia- Unanimous Decision 30-27 x3.
Elias Theodorou vs Cezar Mutante
It was a very close fight between Elias and Cezar, however not the most aesthetically pleasing. It was as if Theodorou had the game-plan of fighting everywhere and Mutante just looked for the takedown once per round. Judges agreed and rewarded Elias with the victory.
Elias Theodorou def. Cezar Mutante- Unanimous Decision 30-27, 29-28 x2.
Sara McMann vs. Gina Mazany
Sara McMann looked crazy impressive in her fight with Mazany, all 1:14 of it. She nailed the takedown and landed in perfect arm triangle position. McMann is so strong, it was only a matter of seconds until Mazany tapped. McMann is knocking on that title shot door.
Sara McMann def. Gina Mazany- 1:14 Rd 1, Submission Arm Triangle.
Alessandro Ricci vs. Paul Felder
Paul Felder looked very sharp in his UFC return. Like Paul Felder does, he threw everything with bad intentions. As the round came to a close, Felder threw a short left elbow and shattered Ricci’s nose. Ricci was done and Felder swarmed.
Paul Felder def. Alessandro Ricci- 4:44 Rd 1, TKO.
Nordine Taleb vs Santiago Ponzinibbio
After a very successful round one for Taleb, he found himself dominated in the second round. Ponzinibbio really gave Browne the business, with a nasty eye poke and a smashing straight right that dropped him. Ironically in round 3, the ref warned Taleb for outstretched fingers. Taleb’s nose was busted open and Ponzinibbio targeted it in the third. Both guys ended the fight as a bloody mess. Too close of a fight to call for me, but not for the Halifax judges.
Santiago Ponzinibbio def. Nordine Taleb- Unanimous Decision 29-28 x3.
Randa Markos vs Carla Esparza
It is going to be hard to have a better fight than Randa Markos and Carla Esparza. Both ladies came in looking MUCH improved. Markos used great footwork and aggression, while Esparza’s mixed in her striking with wrestling. The fight was razor close, but the judges gave Markos the edge.
Randa Markos takes the split decision 29-28 x2, 28-29.
Aiemann Zahabi def. Reginaldo Vieira- Unanimous Decision. 30-27 29-28 x2
Thiago Santos def. Jack Marshman- 2:21 Rd 2, TKO.
Fight Pass Prelims
Gerald Meerschaert def. Ryan Janes- 1:34 Rd 1, Sub armbar.
