Holly Holm vs. Germaine de Randamie: The Scorecards
UFC 208 was one of the more interesting events in quite sometime, mainly due to the officiating, or in some cases lack thereof. Unanimous decision wins by Anderson Silva and the new UFC women’s featherweight champion Germaine de Randamie received quite a bit of backlash from fans, media, and the world of social media.
De Randamie defeated Holm via unanimous decision, notching a 48-47 score across the board on all three scorecards. Due to the infant stages of mixed martial arts in the state of New York, NYSAC sanctioned referees do not have a wealth of fight experience.
Despite how many may feel about the outcome of a fight, the opinion of the 3 judges scoring the fight is all that matters. The judges for the Holly Holm vs. Germaine de Randamie bout were Chris Lee, Sal D’Amato, and Jeff Mullen. All three have extensive backgrounds in judging mixed martial arts matches.
The referee for the match, Todd Anderson, came under heavy fire after de Randamie landed big blows after the bell on two occasions. Joe Rogan was adamant about the fact that a point should have been deducted from de Randamie following the second offense. Doing so would have resulted in a 47-47 draw.
While Holm felt she won rounds 3,4, and 5, it should be noted that every round was very close. As Bruce Buffer was reading the scores, Holly’s face showed a bit of disappointment before the decision was read. Whether or not that was because she felt she lost or if she simply felt she didn’t perform well in a win is unclear. When Germaine’s name was announced, Holm didn’t seem too shocked by the decision.
MMADecisions.com tracks every fight and records the scores by the judges and a number of media pundits. Of the 25 people who scored the fight, Holm was favored 13-12. So no matter how you slice it or who you ask, you’re going to get arguments for both sides.
