PFL, TUF Finale and UFC 226 run this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday!
Cancel your plans for later this week, because you’ll be tied to your television getting more than your fill of MMA action! It’s an MMA Overload! Thursday night on NCBSN PFL is running their third card of the season. Of course Friday and Saturday night the UFC takes over with the TUF 27 finale and UFC 226. Here are some of the interesting bouts on those cards.
PFL #3 – Thursday Night NBCSN
Rick Story vs. Yuri Villefort
Two former UFC fighters go toe to toe to earn valuable points for the PFL season-long format. Like a lot of fights on PFL, it features guys who the UFC regurgitated out. UFC Lite err…PFL is making the most of it and throwing some excellent shows. This should be a good fight as well. Rick Story has fight ending power in each hand.
Jake Sheilds vs. Ray Cooper
Jake Shields is an elite level MMA competitor who is criminally underrated. He’s beaten a who’s who of stars in his career. He holds victories over Hayato Sakurai, Carlos Condit, Yushin Okami, Paul Daley, Robbie Lawler, Dan Henderson, Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley. I mean, he’s beat em all. Ray Cooper has vastly less experience and has a checkered win/loss record, but he comes to bang and could pose a threat to Jake if Sheilds is unable to get the fight to the mat. I’m down for Thursday night fights!
TUF 27 Finale – Friday Night FS1
Barb Honchak vs. Roxanne Modafferi
I love watching Roxanne fight, so I’m all in anytime she steps into the cage. Her improvement in the past few years has been unbelievable, as she trains at Syndicate MMA and you can see her getting better in each and every fight. Barb Honchak is a badass, pure and simple. She may be coming off of two losses, but she’s a force and this fight should be a good one!
Joe Giannetti vs. Mike Trizano – TUF Lightweight final
I like both of these fighters. All season long they have shown just a ton of talent and both have listened to their coaches and gotten better on the show. For Joe, when he gets a fight to the canvass, his opponent taps out in a hurry. His grappling is awesome. He’s won both of his fights to reach the final via submission in the first round. Mike is an all-around fighter who has quick hands and good standup. Styles make fights and this is a battle of contrasting styles.
Brad Katona vs. TBA (either Tyler Diamond or Jay Cucciniello)
I expect this fight to be Brad Katona taking on Tyler Diamond. If so it’s a great fight and I will be looking forward to it. Tyler Diamond has great wrestling and some good submission skills. Brad Katona is just a tank with a cement block where his head should be. I think this would be a great fight.
Brad Tavares vs. Israel Adesanya
This is the third fight in the UFC for Isreal Adesanya or “The Last Style Bender” as he’s known. I think he’s facing a considerable increase in talent with Brad Tavares. Tavares has won five of six and four in a row. His loss during that stretch is to Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. I think Isreal is going to have his hands full here, and if he isn’t able to catch Brad with some kind of fancy spinning kick, he could be in for a long, arduous fifteen minutes.
UFC 226 Saturday Night – FS1 and PPV
Max Holloway vs. Brian Ortega
What can you say about this fight, it’s going to be bananas. Max is a stud and Ortega has looked unbeatable in the Octagon. These two are going to have a fight for the ages and when it’s said and done, we’ll not only know who is the best Featherweight on earth is, we’ll also know who one of the pound for pound best fighters are. This fight has been somewhat overshadowed by Stipe and DC, but it’s going to be fireworks!
Daniel Cormier vs. Stipe Miocic
What can be said about this? It’s the super fight of all super fights. Stipe is a dominant heavyweight and many believe the best heavyweight champion the UFC has ever seen. He is super skilled and ridiculously heavy-handed. Daniel Cormier is one of the best fighters to ever put on a pair of gloves. If he beats Stipe, I think his case is made for the being the all time GOAT. I say that with all due respect to Fedor. I can not wait for this fight. UFC, take my money, I just can’t wait.
Francis NGannou vs. Derrick Lewis
Big tree fall hard! One of these guys is going to sleep. Bet the farm on it. These two monsters have enough power between them to move mountains. They are going to square up, and whoever lands first wins. Don’t blink. It’s going to be a blast.
Gokhan Saki vs. Khalil Rountree
Don’t sleep on this fight either. These guys both have unworldly power and someone is going to sleep here as well. Rountree has looked amazing of late, but Saki’s standup is just, special. This one will be a blast as well. Man oh man, if this card delivers on half of its promise it is going to be incredible!
