Jon Fitch gets his first Bellator opponent and it’s a doozy

Jon Fitch signed with Bellator and last night they announced when and who he’d fight first.

Amercian Kickboxing Academy’s Jon Fitch will be heading to Bellator to ply his trade after asking PFL (formally WSOF) for his release. We reported the signing yesterday, but today more is known. At last night’s Bellator event, they announced he would be making his promotional debut in May at Bellator 199.

The event is in his hometown of San Jose, CA and he’ll be taking on Paul Daley. It’s a bigtime clash of highly ranked Welterweights and the winner could find himself in either a title fight or a title eliminator with Douglas Lima. Lima lost the belt in a hard-fought five round scrap with Rory MacDonald in January.

Jon Fitch (30-7) was the WSOF Welterweight champion when the company pivoted and became Pro Fighters League. They opted to strip all champions and they are holding a “season type” tournament with playoffs. The winner in each division is said to take home 1 million dollars.

Paul Daley (40-15) enters this fight on the heels of defeating Lorenz Larkin back at Bellator 183. Daley is 7-2 in his last 9 and his losses come to former champion Douglas Lima and current champion Rory MacDonald. A victory over Jon Fitch would put him right in the mix for a title rematch.

The event takes place May 12th in San Jose, CA and is headlined by King Mo Lawal facing off against Ryan Bader in the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix.
