This past weekend saw a bevy of great combat sports events – UFC 206, Bellator 168, Glory Kickboxing, and flying under the radar was a pretty cool submission only event, Submission Underground 2.
Submission Underground, a grappling tournament run by veteran MMA fighter and commentator Chael Sonnen, held its second event SUG2 in Portland, Oregon, headlined by a long awaited contest between former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones and former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson. The two were once scheduled to do battle inside the octagon at UFC 151 but the fight had to be scrapped due to Henderson tearing his MCL.
Jones, who came into the match with a 31-pound weight advantage, got to showcase his new found love of jiu-jitsu. After some playful moments early on that included a fake H-Bomb from Hendo, Jones shot in for a takedown and quickly established top position. That huge weight advantage would come into play as the former pound-for-pound best fighter in the world worked his way to an arm-triangle choke earning the submission victory at 6:39 mark.
Following the match Jones, despite their past differences, praised Sonnen on the event and when asked by Bellator’s new big name to come back to compete again at their January 29th event a willful Bones responded, “I’m thinking me and you, Chael, should do a little something something.” Sonnen was quick to take him up on the challenge, “In that case, I will see you January 29th.”
Jon Jones and Dan Henderson weren’t the only marquee names on the card. The co-main event saw former UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion Miesha Tate take on 14th ranked contender Jessica Eye. The two met once before back in 2015 with Tate earning the decision victory. History repeated itself as Tate managed to get the win via escape time in overtime.
Also on the card was MMA veteran Jeff Monson taking on an opponent with a 70-pound weight advantage in Warren Brooks. Monson, who has 87 MMA bouts under his belt, scored the submission victory with a rear naked choke 46 seconds into overtime.
By all accounts it was a great event and shows a very promising future ahead for Submission Underground. Submission Underground 3 will take place January 27, 2017, with what would appear to be a potential, yet not finalized, main event featuring Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen, with a stream available at flograppling.com.
