Josh Barnett wins TNA heavyweight title…or does he?

If the above doesn’t give you pause, Josh Barnett appeared on a show and may have won a championship. The bout, however, was taped and is not expected to air on television until February. So if you don’t like spoilers you should stop reading here. Otherwise…

Former UFC champion Josh Barnett made his TNA debut last night in Orlando, Florida. Barnett challenged TNA world heavyweight champion Bobby Lashley to a match and the two threw down later in the show.

Josh Barnett wins TNA heavyweight title...or does he?Barnett won the match and was announced as the new TNA world heavyweight champion. BUT WAIT! The match ended in controversy as the referee apparently did not see that Lashley’s shoulder was up while being pinned. Another referee was quickly on the scene to take control of the mess.

After the match restarted it was Lashley who came out on top this time to retain his title. Perhaps the most interesting twist to this entire match is that thanks to pro wrestling, we are getting to see a feud play out between a current UFC heavyweight and a current Bellator heavyweight.

Barnett was most recently in the news after USADA announced that he was flagged for a potential anti-doping violation. No word yet on the findings of that investigation.

Barnett is no stranger to the wrestling scene. He made quite a name for himself overseas wth New Japan Pro Wrestling in the early 2000s. Years later he would appear in Antonio Inoki’s Inoki Genome Federation where had wins over some huge names including MMA stars Bob Sapp, Tim Sylvia, Tank Abbott, and the afore mentioned Bobby Lashley.

Barnett is truly a fighter’s fighter. Whether it’s mixed martial arts, professional wrestling, or even the Metamoris stage, there’s no fight that Josh Barnett is afraid of.

No word yet on the exact air date in February for TNA Impact.
