Khabib Nurmagomedov UFC 209 Q & A highlights

As part of fight week for UFC 208, the UFC did a little something different to promote its following pay-per-view event, UFC 209. Khabib Nurmagomedov, the #1 ranked lightweight, sat down for a Q & A session in Brighton Beach, a predominantly Russian neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is set to face Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title at UFC 209.

The event, held at National Restaurant & Night Club, was open to the public. Here are some of the highlights.

On how he feels about fighting for the interim title:

  • “I don’t think this is the interim title because I fight with guy who have 9 [fight] win streak in UFC before”
  • “I think this is real high-level fight for the lightweight division. I don’t think this is fight for the interim belt. Who win this fight I think he become not interim, he is real champ because I don’t think this guy (Conor McGregor) wants to defend his belt.”

His thoughts on Tony Ferguson:

  • “I don’t feel nothing about him. He’s just another opponent. When the cage close he wants to smash my face, how can I respect him?”
  • “Before fight I cannot respect him. But when fight is finished, it’s ok.”
  • “I think I can beat him easily.”
  • “My plan is make him tired, have little bit of talk with him, make him understand who is who, and after finish.”

On talking trash to Dana White while fighting Michael Johnson:

  • “I don’t think this is trash talking. I talk with him(Johnson) what I think.”
  • “I understand he’s tired now I can finish him. I talk with him like, ‘I don’t want to smash your face, you can give up.”
  • “The talk with Dana, I’m a little bit upset with him that’s why I talk to him like, ‘Don’t send me this bullshit contract . First time you send me fight for the title, 2 contracts, 205 and 206, and after you give me #6 guy in lightweight [division].’ I say after this you have to give me real fight. He say finish this fight, I say this fight already finished.”

On other fighters being scared to fight him:

  • “I know they worry. They don’t want to look very bad inside the cage. Because my style is not like regular wrestler. I think they worry about my style and don’t want to look very bad inside the cage, that’s why a lot of people don’t take this fight.”

On his fan base:

  • “I have very big fan base. Not only in Russia, all USSR country. Like Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan. UFC no understand how I have big fan group. Because I am Muslim, I have more than one billion Muslim around the world and we don’t have a lot of fighters. Now I am the best Muslim fighter in UFC.”

On Conor McGregor:

  • “I think if Conor have one fan, I have more than him twenty times.”
  • “This chicken is no loyal guy. If you remember first time he fight in UFC, he asked to Dana to give him fifty thousand [bonus].”
  • “UFC make him. If he never fight in UFC, how he become like this? Now he have name.”
  • “Now UFC have to make my name big. Because UFC don’t put about this place, nothing (today’s event). They put to twitter but they no promote this Q & A through Instagram.”
  • “They have to promote this fight. Me versus him after I beat Tony Ferguson. And I’m gonna smash this guy.”
  • “Have to make him humble.”
  • “I don’t give a shit about Conor. When I come to the UFC I never think about Conor. I think about only belt.”

On his relationship with Dana White:

  • “It’s ok, I don’t have problem with him. Business is just business. He is not my friend, he’s not my very close guy. Just business.”

On his manager not being allowed in the AKA gym by Daniel Cormier:

  • “Now he manage Anthony Johnson. We like family, I think Daniel is right. Maybe after fight. If Anthony Johnson no knock him out, he can come to AKA. I understand. If Tony Ferguson manager want to come to AKA of course I kick him out.”

On Fedor Emelianenko:

  • “I think Fedor is legend. Not about only Russia, he is greatest MMA fighter of all-time.”

On what he’s learned from his father:

  • “Father is everything for me. All my life he take care of me, training every day. He’s everything for me.”

On Jose Aldo:

  • “I can take easy fight like Jose Aldo and smash this guy. For me this is very easy fight.”

On Nate Diaz:

  • “He lose mare than 10 times in the UFC. How this possible? All UFC high-level opponents, top 10 guys beat him. He don’t remember when he win. He beat only this chicken (McGregor).”

On whether he would accept a fight with McGregor in Ireland:

  • “Let’s go. Beat this guy in Ireland is very good. Make him humble. Not only him, all of Ireland.”

Unknowingly quoting rap legend and Brooklyn icon The Notorious B.I.G.:

  • “More money, more problems.”
