It’s looking like Luke Rockhold will face Robert Whittaker at UFC 221

Georges St-Pierre seems to be out of the Middleweight picture at this point.

The UFC is nothing if not adaptable. Georges St-Pierre returned to the Octagon and defeated Michael Bisping to become the Middleweight Champion. That said, getting to Middleweight was not good at all to GSP’s body. He’s now suffering from colitis and if he opts to return to the cage it’s likely to be at Welterweight.  He also said in an interview earlier today that he doesn’t think he’s going back to 185. So we have interim champion Robert Whittaker waiting for a wait. Enter Luke Rockhold.

The two outstanding Middleweights are being discussed as a potential headline fight for Perth, Austrailia’s UFC 221. I think if GSP is not going back to Middleweight it makes sense to make Whittaker vs. Rockhold for the undisputed Middleweight belt. It would be a very interesting matchup and crown the best Middleweight in the division.

Robert Whittaker (19-4) was a fighter who many saw as improving but when he took Jacare Sousa down at UFC on FOX 24 people really started to pay attention. In his next bout, he defeated Yoel Romero to become the Interim champion. “Bobby Knuckles” as he’s called is a great fighter, and at the young age of 26, represents a future potential star for the UFC.

Luke Rockhold (16-3) is a great fighter with a ton of talent. Not only is he a naturally gifted athlete he works hard. Really, really hard. You can’t compete with Daniel Cormier in the gym and not come out the other side better for it. This guy has been getting roughed up by DC and Cain Velasquez for years, so nothing really scares him. The former champion was shocked by Bisping who knocked him out, taking his belt, but he is truly a gifted fighter.

Ariel Helwani was the first I saw who mentioned the fight, but it has definitely picked up steam.
