Pacquiao (59-6-2) last fought in November, after his lengthy retirement of seven months. He earned a Unanimous Decision against the youngster Jessie Vargas and took home the WBO Welterweight Championship. Manny looks ready to jump right back in the saddle and fight a star name that can draw big numbers.
Amir Khan (31-4) is coming off of a KO loss to Canelo Alvarez, this past May. Before that, he was on a five-fight win streak and is still one of the more popular fighters today. Khan gave his thought on Pacquiao, in regards to if he still had a lot left to give in boxing.
“Yeah man. You’ve got to respect every fighter. Look at his last fight, he beat a young fighter. Vargas is a good fighter and he beat him comfortably. I think he’s got another two years left in him, after (showing) the way that he fought his last fight.”
“As for me, a lot of people talk about me. I’m only 30 and they say I should retire because I got beat up by Canelo. I moved up two weight classes and fought one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. I just ignore what people say and I’m going to do what I do best. I’ll come back in my next fight and put on a great performance and win. Then they’ll say, ‘Oh he’s amazing, he’s the best again. That’s just the general public for you.”
While negotiations are still in their infancy, these two agreeable parties look like they want to get this fight going. Thank goodness. It will be nice to see something come together quickly in combat sports for a change.
