Matt Mitrione opens up about being pulled from Bellator 172

The highly anticipated Bellator debut of Fedor Emelianenko did not come to pass last night at Bellator 172 as his opponent, Matt Mitrione, was pulled from the card just hours before the show due to kidney stones.

The world of mixed martial arts had the wind knocked out of it momentarily, but the rest of the card went ahead as planned, and Bellator turned in another night filled with knockouts and fast action.

As for Mitrione, he was sent to the hospital to try and pass the stones. Many were quick to call out Matt for pulling out of the fight, going so far as to calling him too scared to step into the cage with Fedor. But Mitrione took to twitter to update us on his status, and to give a little message to his haters.

While the offer is very much appreciated, we can’t help but feel for Matt as he was set to step into the cage for the biggest fight of his career, only to fall ill just a few hours beforehand.

Fedor said he would be ready to fight again in May or June, so hopefully we will get to see these two tangle soon. For his part, Fedor was quite understanding:

“The first emotion was that it was a big surprise when Scott[Coker] told me that Matt [Mitrione] got to the hospital. But that’s the life and we have to accept it the way it is. That could happen with anybody at any moment.”

We wish for a speedy recovery for Matt as a heavyweight kidney stone is no laughing matter.

Stay tuned for more on where Matt, Fedor, and Bellator all go from here.
