The drought is over, it’s an MMA extravaganza this weekend

There were no mainstream MMA events this past weekend. It was an MMA Drought

I know if you’re anything like me, you suffered through an agonizing MMA-less snooze-fest this past weekend. No UFC, no Bellator, no Invicta, not even a live event on AXS for the hardcore fan to tune into and check out.  It was an absolute wasteland for MMA. Well, suffer no longer.  This weekend is PACKED with fistic fun and action.  It’s an MMA extravaganza! Let’s take a look at what’s going down in cages around the country this weekend.

Friday Night – January 9th – AXS TV – LFA 1 from Dallas, TX

Fans of Legacy Fighting and RFA know that the two brands merged in 2016.  Gerald Harris put an amazing exclamation point on Legacy Fights when he slammed Aaron Cobb with vengeance in the main event of Legacy 63.  What a slam!  If you haven’t seen it, check it out below.  Also see his amazing work outside of the cage here.

Now that you’ve seen the KO of the year, let’s take a look at what should make LFA 1 worth watching.  In the main event, the promotion will be crowning their first Bantamweight Champion as Steven Peterson (14-4) and Leandro Higo (16-2) meet.  Both fighters held the 135 pound titles in their previous organizations, and with the merge, it’s time to decide who the new champion is.  It will undoubtedly pack some action.

Another reason to check out this event is because it is packed with good young talent.  The combined records of the fighters on the maincard is an impressive 85-17.  Besides, it’s always nice to catch up with the up and comers and get an idea of who might be on the UFC roster in the coming months and years.

Friday Night – January 9th – UFC Fight Pass – Invicta FC 21 from Kansas City, MO

Invicta FC puts on great events. They are always entertaining, feature exciting fights and are put on professionally without delay between fights.  I enjoy watching Invicta a ton, and this weekend, they have another show that is can’t miss on your MMA radar.

In the main event, Charmaine Tweet and Megan Anderson will meet for the Interim Invicta FC Featherweight Title.  Current champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos is looking at a suspension for a failed USADA test so there is a necessity for an interim title.  Both Tweet and Anderson are skilled fighters, and this one should be an absolute barn-burner as they compete for the gold.

The rest of the card is pretty darn good too, as Jodie Esquibel will meet DeAnna Bennett and Raquel Pa’aluhi will face off against Pannie Kianzad.  Aspen Ladd brings her unblemished 4-0 record into a match with Sijara Eubanks.  Lastly, Washington’s own Amy Montenegro will be back in the Invicta cage taking on experienced veteran Celine Haga.

Shannon Knapp puts on a quality event, and I never miss it on UFC Fight Pass.

Saturday Night – January 10th – FOX Sports 1 – UFC Fight Night 103 from Phoenix, AZ

All you need to know about this event is it features the return of “The Prodigy” BJ Penn to the UFC.  He will face off with the very dangerous Yair Rodriguez.  I can not wait to see what BJ Penn brings to the table after a complete camp at Jackson Winks gym in Albuquerque, NM.  Can he turn back the clock and capture his former glory, or will he suffer a beating at the hands of Rodriguez, who possesses deadly kicks.  It is undoubtedly a can’t miss fight this weekend.

Of course the UFC is bringing some other talent to Phoenix and in the co main event, Joe Lauzon will take on Marcin Held. Both guys are dangerous on the ground, and they could have some world class transitions and grappling exchanges.  I’m all in anytime Joe Lauzon fights, so this is awesome in my book.

Court McGee will be facing off with the hilarious and dangerous Ben Saunders on the card as well.  I’d expect that fight to be fireworks, for as long as it lasts.

In another tilt that could be fun and contentious Sergio Pettis and John Moraga will square off.  That fight should be fun. Both guys are quick and pack a shot.

All in all, it’s a deep weekend of MMA action.  With last week’s drought, it’s much needed.  It’s like a fresh shower of violence after a long dry season.  When Meryl Streep is topping the MMA News, you know it’s time for some fights.
