Nicco Montano set to defend title against Valentina Shevchenko

TUF Winner and first Flyweight champion will defend her title at UFC 228

Nicco Montano won TUF 26 by defeating Roxanne Modafferi some 18 months ago and has not been back in the Octagon since. She’s been nursing some injuries and is finally ready to defend her title. That said, it seems she’s drawn the unfortunate task of facing Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 228 in September. It’s going to be a tall order for Nicco to hold onto her belt.

Valentina Shevchenko (15-3) is a savage and in her last outing, she absolutely brutalized her opponent Priscila Cachoeira. It was an absolute mauling, and Shevchenko looked every bit the killer that she is. She has three losses in her career and two are to Bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, the last being via split decision. Her other loss was some eight years ago against Liz Carmouche.

Nicco Montano (4-2) on the other hand has lost a couple of fights, one in King of the Cage and one in HD-MMA. She has not faced near the caliber Valentina has, and she’s not been dominant over the lesser competition. Nicco will be a substantial underdog despite being champion, but she’s pretty game and should not just be completely¬†discounted. During The Ultimate Fighter, she ran the table, defeating Lauren Murphy, Montana De La Rosa, Barb Honchak and Roxanne Modafferi. That’s pretty impressive.

UFC 228 takes place September 8th from Dallas, TX. You can see the current card by clicking here.
