The UFC strips Nicco Montano of her Flyweight title

Dana White said Nicco would be stripped and Valentina would fight for the vacant title this year.

Well, flyweight champion Nicco Montano, we hardly knew you at all. The fighter who was forced out of her title fight tomorrow night when she had kidney issues, has been stripped of her world title, per Dana White. Nicco won the belt as part of the The Ultimate Fighter season 26 by beating Roxanne Modafferi. She suffered a foot injury in that fight that required a lengthy recovery. Then she had a serious bout of tonsillitis and was on the shelf again.

Ariel Helwani reported a while back that the UFC brass wasn’t happy with her holding up the division, a statement she denied. It seems however after all was said and done, the UFC was simply done and ready to move on from Nicco. It remains to be seen if and when she fights again in the UFC.

As far as who Valentina Shevchenko might face for the title is a matter of conjecture. Kaitlyn Chookagian seems to be a reasonable opponent as is Sijara Eubanks if she can get past Jessica Eye. We’ll all learn that together over the coming weeks. As far as Nicco goes, it will go down as an uneventful championship at best.
