According to various reports, first reported by ESPN, Ortiz/Liddell III is official for Nov. 24th
Oscar de la Hoya spoke with Brett Okamoto of ESPN and dropped the news that the fight between Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell is official for November 24th. The fight will take place in the famous Forum in Inglewood, CA. It’s the former home of the Showtime-era LA Lakers and was rejuvenated and updated in 2011.
Oscar said in an interview with Brett that the fight was set to happen. He also noted he’s excited to jump into the MMA business.
“I’m excited for our first Golden Boy MMA event. It reminds me of the first-ever fight I did in boxing. I’m going to see how this one goes, but just the way I did in boxing, I plan on becoming a regular promoter of MMA. There’s no reason I should only promote one sport.”
If the event does well, it could be nice to see another known promoter involved in MMA. It will provide competition for the UFC in terms of paying their fighters a fair wage. Right now their only real opportunity is in Bellator, but this could provide another avenue for fighters to seek what they feel they’re worth. Speaking of which, De La Hoya spoke on their potential pay a little as well.
“I can’t get into the specifics of these deals, but I’ll tell you that (they) will be making a hell of a lot more money than they have with anybody else. They’ll participate in revenue from PPV, gate and everything else that comes in. This will be the most lucrative fight of their careers. I think this fight will be very lucrative for both guys. This is an opportunity for them to show the world they still have what it takes to fight in the Octagon. I strongly feel it’s never too late with two guys like this. Two names of this caliber, you can’t go wrong.”
Good for Tito and Chuck, they are icons of the sport and if they can make one more trip to the cage and earn a potential windfall, more power to them. I know a lot of people will undoubtedly be watching.
