Raquel Pennington suffers a broken leg, postponing title fight with Nunes

Raquel Pennington was in an auto accident in Colorado, injuring the leg.

It seems as if the UFC had been planning to have Amanda Nunes defend her title against Raquel Pennington at UFC 219. Though contracts had not been signed, verbal agreements were reached by all parties involved. Unfortunately, an ATV accident and leg injury will again put Pennington on the shelf, and cost her a title shot.  Raquel defeated Miesha Tate in her last fight, but a shoulder injury put her on the sidelines for the past year.

Amanda Nunes (15-4) has been on a roll, defeating Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate and Valentina Shevchenko in her last three fights. She’s also won six consecutive fights. Her last loss was to Cat Zingano back at UFC 178. It’s not clear at this point as to whether Nunes will still compete on the card. If so let’s look at the rankings for potential opponents.

Potential New Opponents?

#1 Valentina Shevchenko: Amanda just beat her, and has defeated her twice in the past 18 months. Pretty unlikely she’d get another shot at the title at this point.

#2 Holly Holm: Holly is looking at a fight with Cyborg for the Featherweight title. It also seems odd she’d be ranked #2 with three losses in her past four fights. Not a great fit.

#3 Juliana Pena: Juliana has recently announced she’s pregnant and out of the UFC for the next 12-18 months.

#4 Raquel Pennington: If you’ve been paying attention, she’s broken her leg.

#5 Ronda Rousey: Thought to be retired and training for WWE.

#6 Cat Zingano: Makes sense just from the standpoint that she defeated Nunes, but Cat has lost two in a row.  It’s probably not a good idea to reward her with a world title shot.

#7 Sara McMann: Lost her last fight, but has won 3 of 4. Possible I suppose.

I mean, that’s the top seven in the division, so I’m not sure there’s a natural fight that makes sense. I’d say go with Cat Zingano, at least there’s a built-in story there with Cat having beaten Amanda in the past.
