Last night’s UFC on FOX from Denver was an action packed event. Headlined by bantamweight contenders Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna Pena, UFC on FOX 23 was expected to do big numbers in the ratings.
The overnight ratings are in, and last night’s card pulled in a reported 2.02 million viewers. This is a pretty sizable drop-off from the 3.2 million viewers the previous UFC on FOX drew, and is the lowest rated January UFC on FOX card since the start of the TV deal.
UFC on FOX 22 featured a main event with Michelle Waterson and Paige VanZant. The ratings peaked during that fight at 4.8 million viewers.
While last night’s event also featured fan favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, it lacked the main stream name like VanZant, or golden boy aspect of Sage Northcutt that we saw at UFC on FOX 22.
There are often too many factors to take into account for why a show may or may not draw. And while this is only the overnight report, most shows show an improvement when all numbers are in. Ratings aren’t expected to show much, if any, improvement however.
Valentina Shevchenko defeated Julianna Pena in the main event via armbar in the 2nd-round and will be fighting Amanda Nunes for the bantamweight title. No date for that fight has been announced yet.
