Sawa Says – Devon Sawa makes picks for UFC on Fox 23

Devon Sawa is back, to share his picks for the main card of UFC on FOX 23.  The event airs live tomorrow at 5PM PST and the prelims can be found on Fox Sports 1 at 2PM PST.  Sawa went 3-1 last time he picked, so we’ll see how he does as he takes a look at this card featuring Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna Pena.  Let’s find out what Sawa Says.
Devon’s 2017 Pick Record – 3-1
Valentina Shevchenko (13-2) vs. Julianna Pena (8-2)

This is a hard fight for me to pick. Without looking at the odds I’m assuming it’s close. Pena might be the slight favorite. —  If Pena closes the distance and makes this a dog fight she should be able to grind out a win. If Shevchenko can find her sweet spot range and put things together, she may be too much to handle.

Who Wins: I’m going Pena

How: Decision.

Donald Cerrone (32-7, 1NC) vs. Jorge Masvidal (31-11)
Donald Cerrone has always been one of my favorite fighters. Not just because he’s the company guy that fights a half dozen times a year while maintaining a Budweiser diet and bull rides on the side.  He’s a Jackson/Wink textbook guy. Incredibly well rounded. His hands are fast, he puts his punches together and his combos always end with a dynamite kick that he’s turned his hips over and torqued his entire body into. He stalks forward ready to bang without a worry in the world if the fight ends up on the ground. Now don’t get me wrong, Masvidal is no slouch, but I just a think a Cerrone that’s not cutting a lot of weight (now at 170) is a bad, bad man.
Who Wins: Cerrone.

How: TKO 2nd.

Andrei Arlovski (25-13, 1NC) vs. Francis Ngannou (9-1)

The classic tale of throwing the young talent to the old legend on their way out.  Arlovski’s coming off three losses, but lets keep in mind the names of the men that beat him. Also: Arlovski has surprised us before. I haven’t paid a lot of attention to Ngannou but that’s exactly why the UFC’s made this fight.
Who Wins: Ngannou

How: TKO 1st

Alex Caceres (12-9) vs. Jason Knight (15-2)

Knight’s toughest fight yet.  Caceres is hit or miss but he’s been in the cage with some legit competition. Faber, Yair, even young Pettis. I feel the experience will play into this one.

Who Wins: Caceres

How: Decision

Nate Marquardt (35-16-2) vs. Sam Alvey (29-8-0, 1NC)

Both fighters coming off wins. Could be a slug-fest but I doubt it. Surprised this is the first fight up on FOX regular.

Who Wins: Nate… no Sam.. no Nate….. No SAM!! Final answer.. Sam.
