The UFC women’s bantamweight division is still under the rule of “The Lioness” Amanda Nunes. But if Valentina Shevchenko has her way, the reigning queen of the 135lbs jungle will be dethroned sooner rather than later.
Shevchenko put herself in position for a title shot when she submitted Julianna Pena at UFC on FOX 23 from Denver. Following the win, it was all but assumed it was just a matter of time before Valentina and Amanda clashed in a rematch for the bantamweight title.
Valentina dropped a unanimous decision to Nunes at UFC 196 and has been clamoring for a second chance ever since.
There’s just one problem, Nunes seems to have her sights set on a run at the 145lbs title as well. Which, according to Shevchenko, is her way of running.
TMZ Sports caught up with “The Bullet” and asked her when we might see her and Nunes step into the octagon.
“She knows that I am a dangerous opponent for her and she will try to avoid this fight. Maybe she will say, ‘Let’s do it later’, or ‘I want to fight 145’, looking for any kind of reason to avoid the fight.”
Valentina also touches briefly on their first encounter last March. Check out the video below to hear more from “The Bullet”:
