Shogun Rua releases a statement after his KO loss to Anthony Smith

Shogun is a classy fighter, and he’s part of a Pride history that I adore.

Sunday was a tough pill to swallow for fans of Pride and one of their original studs. Shogun Rua was a Brazilain buzzsaw in Pride, and he’d done well in his transition into the UFC as well. He’s been part of some wars, and he’s starting to wear the mileage from those battles. Sunday he was stopped in dramatic fashion by Anthony Smith who has really reinvented himself and hit his stride.

To see Shogun get stopped like that was hard. In the moments after the fight, watching him trying to get to his feet I felt a familiar pit in my stomach. I feel it when all my favorites suffer at the end of their career. There’s no graceful exit in MMA. You fight until you can’t find anymore, and the end is normally a violent fall from grace. This was no different.

Shogun Rua would not take away from Smith and showed him respect in his Instagram post after the fight. He’s a class act and a warrior of the highest measure. Here’s what he had to say about the fight.

“Unfortunately we don’t always get the result we want, and to understand that fact is part of life. Congratulations to Anthony Smith. For so many times I was celebrating at this moment and I can’t take his merits from him. I dedicated myself, trained hard, and did all that was within my reach for this fight, but he was better yesterday. Life continues, thank you all for the support.”

Unfortunately we don’t always get the result we want, and to understand that fact is part of life. Congratulations to Anthony Smith. For so many times I was celebrating at this moment and I can’t take his merits from him. I dedicated myself, trained hard, and did all that was within my reach for this fight, but he was better yesterday. Life continues, thank you all for the support.
