Submission Underground 3, Monson and Mendes ready for action

Submission Underground, the grappling competition started by Chael Sonnen, is quickly becoming a favorite stop for many in mixed martial arts. This past December at Submission Underground 2, UFC veterans Miesha Tate and Jessica Eye squared off; and the main event featured two of the biggest names in the history of the sport, Jon Jones and Dan Henderson.

Tomorrow, Submission Underground 3 is set to take place, and once again is not short on talent from the mixed martial arts world. Current UFC star Chad Mendes is set to take on Jeff Glover, and longtime MMA veteran Jeff Monson will be battling rising jiu-jitsu superstar Gordon Ryan.

The matchup between Ryan and Monson is particularly intriguing. Ryan will be turning 22 this year and has already put together an impressive resume. A two time Eddie Bravo Invitational champion (middleweight and absolute), Ryan has shown a mastery of the leg lock game, a strategy that very much neutralizes any size disadvantages.

But it’s not just Monson’s size that makes him a threat. He has an impressive grappling resume to boast as well. A 2x ADCC world champion, the 46 year-old Monson also has 88 professional mixed martial arts fights to his credit, dating all the way back to 1997 (Ryan was born in 1995).

Two men that simply love to compete. This match has so many great elements to it; the size difference, the age difference, old-school vs. new school, the list goes on.Submission Underground, the grappling competition started by Chael Sonnen, is quickly becoming a favorite stop for many in mixed martial arts.

Chad Mendes is currently a serving a 2-year suspension due to a failed drug test in June of 2016. Submission Underground and other competitions like it give fighters like Mendes a chance to still compete. His suspension isn’t up until June 10, 2018, so perhaps we will see him in more of these events.

Both Mendes and Glover have a strong grappling pedigree. Mendes is a 2x All-American wrestler at the collegiate level and Glover is a 2x PanAM jiu-jitsu champion. For fans of grappling, this is definitely a fight to watch closely.

Submission Underground 3 takes place this Sunday, January 29th, from the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon. You can stream it live at FloCombat.com starting at 3pm PST.
