With all of the storylines and finished that came from UFC Sao Paulo, Charle Oliveira accomplished one of the biggest feats in UFC history. This feat has been overlooked by many, as it seemed that other storylines took center stage instead.
Oliveira broke Royce Gracie’s UFC submission record on Saturday night and for all intensive purposes, that is a huge deal. Gracie is not only the measuring stick for combatants in the UFC but also the biggest influence for most of the top fighters in the world.
The world watched in awe as Gracie was ripping the limbs off of men much bigger than him by using jiu-jitsu. 25 years later BJJ is one of the main disciplines that you need to be well-versed in if you want to succeed at the highest level.
Here’s the crazy part about Oliveira’s accomplishment; Gracie was submitting guys who had never even seen or heard of jiu-jitsu. Oliveira has been tapping guys that have been training BJJ for years. In my opinion that makes his feat even more impressive.
Oliveira now sits in the history books with 11 wins by submission in the UFC.
