UFC 211 Embedded: Vlog Series, Episode Three. Travel and Media obligations.

UFC 211 Embedded

It’s time for UFC 211 Embedded Ep. 3

The episode opens with Junior Dos Santos spending some time at the beach at night. He says he comes there to think and focus. He goes for a swim and says, “These little moments that you have by yourself, are the best moments.”  He then is seen with his family at a local Coconut Creek restaurant.

We then are transported from the beauty of Florida to the less beautiful Cleveland as Stipe is shown working out in his gym.  We then visit Stipe’s home, where he and his wife are answering fan mail. Stipe is about as funny a guy as there is in the UFC, and he should most definitely have his own show. He’s shown traveling getting ready to depart for some media obligations.

Next, we’re taken to Brazil and the home of Jessica Andrade. She’s packing up her stuff, getting ready to travel to Dallas. Her wife and she are laughing about bringing jackets, everyone seems really relaxed.

We head to Florida again, to catch up with Joanna as she is leaving town as well. She’s headed to Hartford, CT to do some media at ESPN. She poses with an officer for a picture and is on her way.  Joanna and Stipe get in a car and are driven to ESPN headquarters. They say ladies first, and Stipe goes first and gets made fun of for it.  Stipe practices his ultra smooth radio voice and makes everyone laugh.

The last scene, a lady from ESPN comes up and asks if she can touch Stipe’s belt and he says, “Of course.” As she leans in to touch the top of it, he says, “No, not there!” and she panics before he tells her he’s just kidding. Classic Stipe, never change, please.

ESPN mistakenly runs Conor McGregor video during Tyron Woodley interview

tyron woodley

When Tyron Woodley sees his appearance on ESPN today, he won’t be pleased.

Sometimes things just don’t go your way.  Tyron Woodley, who has expressed concerns of racism in the UFC and sports media appeared on ESPN Face to Face this morning to address his upcoming fight at UFC 209.  He spoke regarding Dana White referring to him as a “drama queen” and talked about his upbringing in Ferguson, MO.  He talks about being evicted from homes, sneaking in to take cold showers and his general struggle.

Woodley wants more said about that upbringing, more about who is really is and what he’s been through.  He wants people to understand his struggle.  During the interview, they talked about the first fight between himself and Stephen Thompson and he said, show the highlights.  At that point, highlights came on, but it wasn’t Tyron at all.  It was instead a video highlight reel featuring Conor McGregor.  I can’t imagine that’s going to endear ESPN to Woodley.

If you want to know the real Tyron Woodley, through his own eyes, check out his Youtube channel.  He posts a lot of great content there.  You can see Tyron’s guest spot on ESPN below.

ESPN takes a look at weight cutting in MMA with Cris Cyborg

ESPN takes a look at weight cutting in MMA with Cris Cyborg

Ask any fighter and they’ll tell you, it’s not the training or the fight that’s the hard part. That’s the part they love. It’s the weight cut that truly sucks. Few fighters have made headlines recently more than Cris Cyborg as it relates to weight cutting.

Cyborg, the Invicta FC featherweight champion, regularly fights at 145lbs. She has had two fights in the UFC at a catchweight of 140lbs and the weight cuts for her were absolutely brutal on both occasions. Her recent documentary “Cyborg” showed us an incredibly vulnerable and emotional Cristiane Justino as she tried to shed those last few pounds to make weight.

She turned down two fights at 145lbs recently, citing her ongoing recovery from last year’s weight cuts as her reasoning. In December, she was flagged by USADA for testing positive for a diuretic that she maintains was prescribed to her by a physician to help with that very recovery. The results of that investigation are still pending.

ESPN’s Outside the Lines recently ran a piece on weight cutting in mixed martial arts and featured Cris Cyborg. It is both eye opening and insightful, and it also brings to the forefront some worthy discussion.

The use of an IV is banned during weight cutting recovery per USADA. But when watching the ESPN piece and seeing what USADA and sanctioning bodies allow these athletes to put themselves through to make weight, is it unfair to withhold from them means to a better recovery?

It certainly is an interesting argument and perhaps one worth having. Watch the piece below and let us know what you think.
