If Evan Dunham wasn’t retiring before his fight with Trinaldo, he is now

Evan Dunham claimed that he would be retiring after his fight with Francisco Trinaldo. If he was second guessing it at all, after UFC Sao Paulo, retirement was a good decision for him. With about 1-minute left in the second round, Trinaldo threw and landed a knee to Dunham’s body that would have stopped a tractor in its tracks.

Perfectly timed and placed, the knee doubled Dunham over. Immediately he howled at the excruciating pain that he was feeling. It was probably one of the easier stoppages for referee Marc Goddard, as a scream is the same thing as verbally submitting.

Dunham has been an outstanding UFC lightweight in his career. It’s tough to go out this way, but Dunham was up and about on his own accord, shortly after.

Evan Dunham announces that his next fight in Sao Paulo will be his last

Evan Dunham took to his Instagram and announced that his fight with Francisco Trinaldo at UFC: Sao Paulo will be his last. The 19-fight UFC lightweight will hang ’em up to focus more on his jiu-jitsu school. Dunham has been up and down in his UFC career but he has only fought the best that the world has to offer.

“September 22 will be my last fight. I can retire from the sport that I love with my head held high. I know that I never held anything back while in the cage and September 22 will be no different. My goals and priorities have shifted throughout the years and I am ready to concentrate on building my gym, as well as any new opportunities that come my way.

I have gone toe 2 toe with many of the worlds best competitors and I am truly grateful for this. My passion for Jiu Jitsu will continue to be a driving force in my gym and at select Jiu-Jitsu competitions.”

Dunham is almost 37-years-old and it looks like he is smartly not trying to hang around too long. MMA is a brutal sport and is a young man’s game. Happy trails to Mr Dunham and thank you for the years of entertainment.
