I have been a little confused as to why when some people were talking about Invicta FC, comedian Hannibal Buress’ name came up. I’ve seen him at events and in the crowd but I was unaware that he was actually part of the show. Buress went on ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ and revealed all of his involvement with the sport.
Basically, it started with Buress just wanting to get his name out there some more.
“I went to this fight and I saw all these people with banners. They had their names on fighter’s banners and they weren’t that exciting. Like, they were Toyota dealerships. If a Toyota dealership can definitely sponsor a fighter, I can definitely sponsor a fighter. So I reached out to this fighter and asked if I could sponsor her and put my face and website on her outfit and they were like, ‘Yeah’.”
The fighter was Janaisa Morandin and she missed weight, so all of the sponsor work was for nought. Buress then stepped his game up and decided to sponsor the entire Invicta 28 event.
“I asked if I could put my face on the mat. That way, no matter what happens I’ll be on there.”
Buress went on to talk about aging MMA fighters and how it’s so different from other sports. His comparisons are absolutely hilarious.
Hannibal, our sport doesn’t deserve you.
