The herculean strength is what got Kelvin Gastelum on board Team Khabib

herculean-strength-gastelum-khabib

Kelvin Gastelum has hopped on board the Team Khabib train. Sure, he’s seen Khabib fight but he’s never trained with him. Even still, the legend of Khabib’s herculean  strength when he gets a hold of you, continue to make its way around MMA circles. Based on word-of-mouth alone, Gastelum is riding the Khabib train until the wheels fall off.

No one is saying that it is a foregone conclusion that Khabib will beat Conor McGregor. However, Khabib’s body of work speaks for itself. Even in Khabib’s last fight with Al Iaquinta, Joe Rogan drew the ire of fans when he did everything in his power to try and find weaknesses in Khabib’s game.

Gastelum recognizes the skill and strength and gave his honest prediction on the Khabib vs Conor fight.

**Cue the Conor fans hating Gastelum for life now.**

TUF Heavy Hitters. Preview of the new TUF season airing this Wednesday

heavy-hitters-preview-season-airing-wednesday

The Ultimate Fighter: Heavy Hitters, will be airing this Wednesday on FS1. This season of TUF will be coached by Kelvin Gastelum and Robert Whittaker. At the end of the season, the coaches will square off, which means Kelvin Gastelum will get a middleweight title shot against Whittaker.

“Season 28 of The Ultimate Fighter debuts on Wednesday, August 29 live on FS1. Heavyweights and women’s featherweights take center stage this season with middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum as coaches.”

As for the show itself, it’s competition between male heavyweights and the women’s Cyborg division. I say ‘Cyborg division’ because the UFC are looking to put together a 145-pound division for Cris Cyborg, who has seemingly run out of credible opponents at featherweight. They desperately need female fighters at 145 pounds and putting all of them on the show is the way to try and jump-start the division.

Many fans have given up on TUF because they think it’s changed. As someone who’s been watching it since its inception, I can tell you that it has changed, but for the better. The show focuses more on the fights and less on drunken shenanigans, which is what fans have always wanted from the show.

Wish granted.

Kelvin Gastelum loves his Cheetos, hilarious skit from MMA Awards

Kelvin Gastelum

This is good stuff, it reminds me of Daniel Cormier’s “I’m all about the cakes”

The Fighters’ Only MMA Awards is usually good for some laughs, and this year was no different. Adam Hunter and Kelvin Gastelum created a hilarious video about Kelvin’s love of snack foods. I laughed out loud when I saw it and I think you guys will dig it as well. Thanks to Fighters Only for posting the vid to their Twitter account for the world to see.

The MMA Awards took place July 3rd at the Palms in Las Vegas. The program aired on Fox Sports Networks last night and was hosted by Jeremy Piven. Max Holloway won the top award of the evening, the Charles “Mask” Lewis Fighter of the Year.

Cheetos aside, Kelvin has been very solid at Middleweight and he will be coaching opposite of Robert Whittaker on TUF 28 and then the two will meet for the Middleweight championship. So, if Kelvin can get that victory, he’ll have plenty of cash for Cheetos, burritos, Doritos, and Tostitos.

TUF 28 ‘Heavy Hitters’ cast revealed by UFC. Set to air in August

heavy-hitters-cast-air-august

It was announced by the UFC last week that TUF 28 will be coached by two former cast winners. TUF Smashes winner and current UFC middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker, will be one coach. The other coach will be TUF 17 winner, Kelvin Gastelum. The show is set to air on August 29.

TUF 28 will feature a mixed weight and gender cast, once again. The contestants will have 8 male heavyweights and 8 female featherweights. As always, they will fight on the show and the winners will compete on the finale card. The finale will air on November 30. Coaches, Gastelum and Whittaker, will fight for the middleweight title whenever Whittaker is healthy enough to go.

We posted Cris Cyborg’s video at the tryout for the show and there were some familiar names in the featherweight division. The most well-known names are Pannie Kianzad (5-time Invicta vet) and Larissa Pacheco (2-time UFC vet). Most of the other women have fought in Invicta and have experience.

As for the male heavyweights, well, it’s as it always is with heavyweights. They will be more hit-or-miss than the featherweights.

Male heavyweights

Michel Batista
Anderson Da Silva
Juan Francisco Espino Diepa
Justin Frazier
Maurice Greene

Josh Parisian
Ben Sosoli

Female featherweights

UFC 224 Embedded Ep 1. Jacare, Gastelum, Dern, Nunes, Pennington

ufc 224 embedded

The UFC welcomes us on another journey into the lives of fighters prepping for their fight week. Of course, the main and co-main events of UFC 224 are featured, but so is a segment on Mackenzie Dern. I think it’s really telling of the UFC’s attempt at trying to make another star in the women’s division. With the departure of Ronda Rousey; Mackenzie has the look, credentials, and undefeated record that they seem to want to make a star out of.

The main event of UFC 224 is Raquel Pennington vs Amanda Nunes and the co-main is Jacare Souza vs Kelvin Gastelum. The fight that has been most overlooked on the main card will be a legends battle between Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida. Hopefully, those guys make an appearance in episode 2 of Embedded.

From the UFC YouTube Channel:

“On Episode 1 of UFC 224 Embedded, strawweight Mackenzie Dern reflects on a lifetime spent in jiu-jitsu, and middleweight Kelvin Gastelum wraps his camp with a sparring day.

Women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes gets a massage at home, then packs alongside her girlfriend, strawweight Nina Ansaroff. Middleweight Jacare Souza readies for his first UFC fight in Rio. Bantamweight title challenger Raquel Pennington spends her Sunday getting ready for the trip with her fiancee, strawweight Tecia Torres.

Here’s the shot that put Michael Bisping away at Fight Night 122

Michael Bisping

Michael Bisping was doing fine at Fight Night 122 until he wasn’t.

Kelvin Gastelum is a young lion. He’s just an absolute monster in that Octagon. He sent Tim Kennedy home early from 206 with a black eye and last night he dispatched of Michael Bisping in the first round of their main event tilt. Bisbing was looking pretty good early on, landing a couple counter right hands, and working his jab. However, it only takes one mistake, and Bisping overextended on a missed punched and left himself open to counter. And boy, was he countered.

Bisping has said he wants to retire in March after competing in London in his home country.  Hopefully, they can find someone for him to fight that won’t stand and knock his head off. What’s Jake Shields up to?

Thanks to the fine folks at Flo Combat for posting the video via Twitter. It’s a savage shot to end the fight.
