In a very heartfelt message from one of the most iconic jiu-jitsu practitioners on the planet, Marcelo Garcia addressed the removal of Mansher Khera and Dillon Danis from his gym. ‘Suspended’ is the best word we could come up with to describe Danis’ situation. Garcia doesn’t ‘kick people out’ of his gym, so let’s just say that he gave Danis an indefinite hiatus.
Danis has been making waves recently on social media by parroting his friend, Conor McGregor. He’s taking the brash approach to self-promotion, but it appears to have heroically backfired on him. Garcia’s teachings encourage a positive jiu-jitsu culture. When Garcia addressed his school, it sounds like Danis violated the standards that Garcia expects from his students.
“We got Munchi and Dillon to take some good time off from the gym. They need to re-focus and take time, to see what they want. They are not showing things that I taught you guys (positivity through jiu-jitsu culture). It’s really hard for me because this is my home. To come here and see them not appreciate the same values I have… They are not making the standard I believe and the example that I want them to.
I need the people around me to be a positive example because if not, you can get easily distracted. I want people around me that reinforce that (good) example. So, I don’t kick people out. I really don’t want to do that. I told them to take some time off, figure it out. One day if they have a better thought, they come here and I’ll be here and we’ll talk.”
Again, we don’t know exactly what happened, but Garcia made it sound like it was many things which forced the removal. Hopefully, Danis will respond positively to all of this and make some changes.
