UFC 225 looks to have done roughly 250,000 PPV buys

UFC 225

The 250,000 number for that show, would be considered a disappointment UFC 225 was absolutely stacked, and the UFC had to be hoping for some serious interest resulting in a lot of PPV buys. The show had two big main events, Holly Holm and of course CM Punk. Google search reports of the show indicate … Read moreUFC 225 looks to have done roughly 250,000 PPV buys

Dana White not thrilled with “Complete Idiot” Mike Jackson

Dana White

Dana White called Mike Jackson a “Complete Idiot.” The CM Punk experiment came to a lackluster finish Saturday night in his hometown of Chicago. He did manage to go the distance but it was only because his opponent was either uninterested or hits like a 90-year-old lady. Could be a little bit of column A and … Read moreDana White not thrilled with “Complete Idiot” Mike Jackson

UFC 225 Embedded Episode 5 – Time to jump on the scales

UFC 225 Embedded

UFC 225 Embedded Episode 5 is here.

UFC 225 Embedded episode five is out and it’s fight day! We see fighters preparing to hit the scales and make weight for this amazing event. The main event is in jeopardy when Yoel Romero fails to make weight for the second time, in two title shots. It’s almost impossible to believe that he could miss twice for world title opportunities.

From the UFC YouTube

“On Episode 5 of UFC 225 Embedded, a star-studded media day includes middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, opponent Yoel Romero and former titleholders Holly Holm, Rafael Dos Anjos, Andrei Arlovski, Rashad Evans and Carla Esparza. UFC 225’s athletes — including CM Punk, Tai Tuivasa, Megan Anderson, Sergio Pettis, Charles Oliveira, Colby Covington and Mike Jackson — talk to media and stare down their opponents.

Afterward, Punk offers a backstage peek at the United Center, and Anderson begins her weight cut. On Friday morning all fighters make weight except for one, leaving the event’s headliner in jeopardy.  But all parties make it to the ceremonial weigh-in, where UFC President Dana White confirms that Whittaker and Romero will indeed rematch.

From the UFC YouTube

“On Episode 4 of UFC 225 Embedded, interim welterweight title contender Colby Covington continues his fight week family vacation. Featherweight Megan Anderson and welterweight title contender Rafael Dos Anjos continue to work their heavy hands in the training areas.

Hotel ballrooms host a who’s-who of UFC 225, including middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, CM Punk, Ricardo Lamas, Andrei Arlovski and Holly Holm. Middleweight title challenger Yoel Romero joins the stars of the card for the official open workouts, where the Chicago fans make their favorites clear.

UFC 225 media day faceoff video from the UFC

UFC 225 Media Day

The UFC 225 media day faceoff video.

Today the fighters were all in Chicago this afternoon to take part of the UFC 225 media day faceoffs. One by one they took the stage, stood toe to toe and posed for photos. Rafael Dos Anjos looked really intense and seems ready to try and shut down Colby Covington’s awkward summer video tour.

Claudia Gadelha and Carla Esparza had an uneventful staredown, but if you know those two ladies, they are going to save it for the cage. Expect fireworks Saturday night.

CM Punk looked relaxed as Mike Jackson attempts to extend his fifteen minutes of accidental fame.

Jimmy Smith breaks down CM Punk versus Mike Jackson

CM Punk

CM Punk and Mike Jackson will clash at UFC 225 this weekend.

This Saturday night, UFC 225 will take place, and the card is absolutely stacked. Like mega stacked with a side of stacked. Just to help put the event in perspective; Rashad Evans, Joe Benavidez, Sergio Pettis and Clay Guida will all be fighting on the Fight Pass prelim portion of the card. Amazing. However, a lot of people are a little upset at the fact that a pair of 0-1 fighters is on the PPV. CM Punk meets Mike Jackson in a battle of winless fighters who have only competed professionally once.

You can understand why fans might be a bit miffed. Fighters are even more upset about it. That said, CM Punk was a star already when he came to the UFC and he will sell tickets and PPV buys, so he finds himself on the PPV. It’s not supernatural, but it’s also not entirely popular. Evan Shoman wrote about the subject earlier this month and stated, it’s what’s best for business.

Whether we like it or not, it’s going to happen and Jimmy Smith takes us into their camps and breaks down the fight very well. Take a look for yourself.

No matter what, CM Punk on the UFC 225 main card is best for business

matter-cm-punk-ufc-main-card-best-business

While I know all MMA fans are pure of heart and want things to be a certain way, it just isn’t. In fact, our opinion doesn’t really matter at all. All that matters to the UFC is money. Also, money. Lastly, money. By the way, that isn’t a dig at the UFC. The goal of a business is to generate the most dollars as you possibly can. The UFC is a business and their bottom line is more important than what MMA purists want.

We’ve seen this with the UFC’s handling of the UFC 225 card. In my mind, it was never a question that CM Punk would be on the main card. However, fans got into a tizzy when they saw that Punk and Mike Jackson were on the main card with a combined record of 0-2. Fans might not understand, but Punk gets it. He said he’d fight on Fight Pass if he could. The thing is, an entire audience will be buying UFC 225 from CM Punk alone and THAT is why he’s on the main card. In fact, his name recognition is why he’s in the UFC at all.

Curtis Blaydes and Alistair Overeem get it, too. They know that the UFC, first and foremost, is a business. In fact, the only people who don’t seem to ‘get it’ are fans and journalists. People were saying that Overeem and Blaydes were ‘demoted’ to the undercard. In usual Dana White fashion, his retort at the press conference this weekend was priceless.

“Listen, when Alistair Overeem sells as many pay-per-views as CM Punk does, we can argue.”

Yep, that’ll do it.

It should also be noted that the former UFC light heavyweight champion, Rashad Evans, is on the Fight Pass prelims. His fight will be seen by about 70 people.
