UFC looking at Yoel Romero/Alexander Gustafsson for UFC 230

Yoel Romero

This would be an interesting fight at 205 pounds. There have been rumors on a daily basis regarding the main event for UFC 230 in Madison Square Garden. Personally, I feel the UFC is trying to reinvent the wheel as they have a perfectly solid main in Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz. It’s an exciting fight that is … Read moreUFC looking at Yoel Romero/Alexander Gustafsson for UFC 230

Robert Whittaker in TMZ studio promoting TUF and telling stories

robert-whittaker-tmz-studio-promoting-tuf-telling-stories

Robert Whittaker stopped by the TMZ studio for some interview time and to tell some stories. He’s also there to promote the new season of TUF, which airs tomorrow night. He’s coaching alongside Kelvin Gastelum and the two are making the world tour to promote the show. The hosts really have a thing for Yoel Romero and he is the subject throughout most of it.

Whittaker actually tells a funny story regarding Romero, sort of. He revealed that he’d rather fight Yoel Romero and someone else every Saturday, then do what he did the last time he came over from Australia. He had a 15-hour flight and had three children under the age of 3 with him.

That sounds terrible and even worse, he was sitting in economy. I get it, Mr. Whittaker. While getting punched in the face by Romero sounds better, it’s not by much.

Now, just imagine how the people sitting around you felt for 15 hours.

Yoel Romero out of Madison Square Garden fight with Paulo Costa

yoel-romero-madison-paulo-costa

It doesn’t take long for these things to happen in MMA anymore. One day you have a top contender fight and the next, you are scrambling to find a marquee matchup. Yoel Romero revealed to Ariel Helwani that he needed time to recover from orbital bone surgery and his fight with Paulo Costa at Madison Square Garden is off.

Strangely, Romero is a bit heated about the whole situation, which doesn’t make too much sense. However, a lot of times this is a way that fighters try and stay motivated for what they may encounter in the future.

It sounds like he and Paulo will meet up at a later date. Only time will tell.

UFC 225 Embedded

UFC 225 Embedded Episode 5 is here.

UFC 225 Embedded episode five is out and it’s fight day! We see fighters preparing to hit the scales and make weight for this amazing event. The main event is in jeopardy when Yoel Romero fails to make weight for the second time, in two title shots. It’s almost impossible to believe that he could miss twice for world title opportunities.

From the UFC YouTube

UFC 225’s athletes — including CM Punk, Tai Tuivasa, Megan Anderson, Sergio Pettis, Charles Oliveira, Colby Covington and Mike Jackson — talk to media and stare down their opponents.

Afterward, Punk offers a backstage peek at the United Center, and Anderson begins her weight cut. On Friday morning all fighters make weight except for one, leaving the event’s headliner in jeopardy.  But all parties make it to the ceremonial weigh-in, where UFC President Dana White confirms that Whittaker and Romero will indeed rematch.

UFC 225 media day faceoff video from the UFC

UFC 225 Media Day

The UFC 225 media day faceoff video.

Today the fighters were all in Chicago this afternoon to take part of the UFC 225 media day faceoffs. One by one they took the stage, stood toe to toe and posed for photos. Rafael Dos Anjos looked really intense and seems ready to try and shut down Colby Covington’s awkward summer video tour.

Claudia Gadelha and Carla Esparza had an uneventful staredown, but if you know those two ladies, they are going to save it for the cage. Expect fireworks Saturday night.

CM Punk looked relaxed as Mike Jackson attempts to extend his fifteen minutes of accidental fame.

Episode 2 of UFC 225’s Embedded. Whittaker, Tai, Colby, Yoel, Dos Anjos

embedded-whittaker-tai-colby-yoel-dos-anjos

UFC Embedded episode two is out and we are that much closer to UFC 225. This episode features Tai Tuavasa, Robert Whittaker, Colby Covington, Rafael Dos Anjos, and Yoel Romero. These Embedded vids are funny because even though they focus on the fighters, there are always cameos from other fighters and even bigger stars. In this case, Cris Cyborg.

From the UFC YouTube

“On Episode 2 of UFC 225 Embedded, middleweight champion Robert Whittaker keeps things normal with frequent meals and family time.

Australian heavyweight Tai Tuivasa, in town to fight legend Andrei Arlovski, struggles to understand the still waters of the Lake Michigan beach.

Interim welterweight title contender Colby Covington turns a media trip into father-son bonding time, as opponent Rafael Dos Anjos trains alongside featherweight champion Cris Cyborg.

Middleweight title challenger Yoel Romero does press in New York City.”

Luke Rockhold vs Yoel Romero. Real-time corner audio.

rockhold-romero-real-time-corner-audio

Fight Affect brings us another fascinating corner audio video. This video is the real-time cornering from the UFC middleweight interim title fight (but-not-because-Yoel-Romero-missed-weight) between Yoel Romero and Luke Rockhold.

What is most interesting about this video is how Luke listens to everything that his corner says and Yoel does not. It shows that even with the best corner in the world, you can still lose. Conversely, it is crazy how a fighter can have a corner that gives no input whatsoever, but their fighter wins.

Luke’s corner gives very technical advice and it is all the correct advice. Meanwhile, the Spanish you hear from Romero’s corner mostly said things like, “There it is”, “nice”, or “left hand”. For the record, that is NOT super-trainer Mike Brown, who is an amazing corner-man.

Ultimately, reliving exactly what went down during the fight provides us with some beautiful insight as to what was going on that we never saw.

Of course, we all heard and saw, “I luh you” and can never unsee it.
