UFC 206 Early Weigh-In Results: Pettis NOT fighting for the title any more

There is never a dull moment in MMA, folks. The UFC 206 early weigh-ins took place this morning and Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis will NOT be fighting for the UFC Interim Featherweight Title. Pettis stepped on to the scale at 148 pounds, which is three pounds over the 145 pound weight limit. This being a title fight, the is no one pound allowance; Not that it would have mattered. Pettis walked of the stage in disgust, knowing his opportunity for featherweight gold, just went up in smoke. This is the first time in his career that Pettis has missed weight

Fighters who miss weight usually draw the ire of fans and critics. Weight cutting is really a slippery slope, with so many variables attached to it. Falling ill, your wife is cheating on you, your investment in ‘Pokemon Go’ didn’t turn out like your financial advisor thought… Anything can disrupt the weight losing equilibrium. We don’t know why Pettis missed weight and if there were distractions, only that he missed weight.

During this training camp, three of his cars were set on fire. Then a short time later, someone stole items from another car of his. Awesome. I know, I know. It’s no excuse for missing weight. I get that, but you still kind of feel for the guy. Missing weight only affects him. If he beats Max Holloway, it’s just another win. If he loses, Holloway becomes the UFC Interim Featherweight Champion. No harm, no foul I guess. The show must go on and Holloway seemed to be on the same page.

Pettis wasn’t the only one to miss weight this morning. Both Valerie Letourneau and Rustam Khabilov failed to hit their mark. All three fighters have been fined 20% of their purse, which will go to their opponents.
