It was announced today that the UFC will make its return to Dallas with UFC 211. Taking place May 13th, from American Airlines Arena, this will be the promotion’s first event in Dallas since 2015, when Rafael dos Anjos defeated Anthony Pettis to win the lightweight title.
In what is perhaps even bigger news, rumors are swirling that a heavyweight title match between champion Stipe Miocic and #4 ranked heavyweight Junior dos Santos is in the works for the main event. The two met in 2014 in a UFC on FOX main event in a “Fight of the Night” bout that went the distance and could have gone either way. The judges ultimately ruled in favor of JDS, but many felt Miocic (16-2) came out on top.
JDS (18-4) was recently pulled from UFC Fight Night Halifax after his opponent, Stefan Struve, was sidelined with a shoulder injury. The scrapped UFC 207 bout between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum was expected to be a #1 contender match, but it looks like JDS is the one that may be getting the call.
Both dos Santos and Werdum are coming off of a win that was preceded by a loss, so one can argue that they’re essentially in the same boat in terms of who deserves the shot. JDS hasn’t been in a title match since a 2013 loss to then champion Cain Velasquez, and his first fight with Miocic was a toss up, so perhaps they felt now was the time to give him the nod.
No other fights has been announced for the card yet and the Miocic-JDS match is currently just a rumor.
We will have more on the event, and this fight, as news unfolds.
