Pair of former champions added to UFC 219 card in December

UFC 219 is the big year-end event in Las Vegas on Dec. 30th

A pair of former champions will be stepping into the Octagon at UFC 219 on December 30th, 2o17 at UFC 219. Dominick Cruz will be entertaining the cage to take on Jimmy Rivera in a fight with major title implications at Bantamweight.  Another former champion, Carla Esparza will return to the cage to take on Cynthia Calvillo who has exploded on the scene in the Strawweight division.

Dominick Cruz (22-2) lost his title to Cody Garbrandt in his last outing. Prior to that, he was on a major tear, having won twelve fights in a row. A win in this fight against Rivera will almost certainly see him get a shot again at the 135-pound title.

Jimmy Rivera (21-1) more or less had flown under the radar heading into his last fight. He announced his presence in the top five with authority when he dispatched Urijah Faber and Thomas Almeida in back to back contests. Jimmy is now the number 3 ranked Bantamweight in the world. He’ll be taking on the number one ranked Cruz with a world title shot in his sites.

Carla Esparza (12-4) lost her championship in brutal fashion against Joanna Jędrzejczyk. Since that time Carla has won two of three fights. She is looking to climb that ladder, where she currently is ranked number 8.

Cynthia Calvillo (6-0) is an undefeated fighter who has literally come out of nowhere to find herself in the mix at Strawweight. She trains at Team Alpha Male and definitely carries herself with a bit of Diaz swagger. Basically, you don’t want to mess with her. She’s won three fights, all this year, shooting herself up the rankings. This will be her fourth fight this year, and a win here could find her right in the title picture.
