The UFC looks to be counter-program Bellator’s Grand Prix with UFC 224
On January 20th, Bellator had their first Heavyweight Grand Prix match between Chael Sonnen and Rampage Jackson. The UFC opted to run an event the same night, much to viewers chagrin. It seems like the UFC isn’t going to give up on that notion, and will once again air their UFC 224 event on May 12th, the same night as Ryan Bader and King Mo are set to meet.
It’s an interesting concept, but it also falls on Bellator for moving their events from Friday nights to Saturday nights. If Bellator were to continue to run these events on Friday’s it would likely not face direct competition on the same night. UFC 224 is expected to take place in Brazil, but now fights have been announced at this time. Same is true for Bellator’s May 12th event. All is known is Ryan Bader will meet King Mo.
It’s a difficult situation for fans to watch both shows, and avoid spoilers on social media. Part of the fun on fight night is interacting with the other fans on social media. When there are two events running simultaneously, it makes it almost impossible.
