Debate: Does the UFC need a women’s featherweight division?

We are now just two days away from the debut of the UFC women’s featherweight division as Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie face off for the inaugural featherweight title at UFC 208.

When it was first announced that this fight was taking place, and that it was for a new division, there was a bit of a divide among MMA pundits as to whether or not the UFC in fact needs this division.

While they don’t currently have a full division in place, there are fighters in the bantamweight division that can make the jump, and a slew of fighters in Invicta that are chomping at the bit. Holm herself is a former UFC bantamweight champion.

Many believe the division was made for Cris Cyborg, but until we know what comes of her USADA investigation, it will be hard to bank on her name for the division.

UFC on FOX’s panel debated this very topic. UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, Kenny Florian, and former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate weighed in:

Daniel Cormier: “I don’t know if they should have a division at 145lbs. Because when you look at the landscape, can they rank 15 women in this division and all be deserving of their rankings? I don’t think so. So I believe at the very top it’s OK, but I don’t believe they have the depth of 145lbs female fighters to have a division for it.” Daniel Cormier: NAY

Kenny Florian: “I was on that boat for a little bit as well, but now that we have this, we have two phenomenal fighters that are about to fight this weekend. And we have Cyborg who, we’re not sure what’s gonna happen, but she’s one of the biggest names in the sport. And there’s a lot of women outside of the UFC at Invicta. You need a division for them to work towards. I think this is a great thing, we’re gonna get a lot more women in there, and see the depth increase as we move on.” Kenny Florian: YAY

Miesha Tate: “If you build it, it will come. I think bringing in the 145lbs division is great. I think it gives the opportunity for women who are really big and struggle a little bit to make 135lbs, such as Holly, maybe a Cat Zingano. We have Germaine who I think, with the IV ban and the rehydration, and cutting weight becoming less and less of a thing that fighters want to do with that IV ban, I think this is a great addition to the UFC.” Miesha Tate: YAY

So that puts us at a 2-1 vote in favor of the division. So what do you guys think? A great addition to the UFC or not yet necessary?
