Dana White Wants Conor McGregor to Fight Tony Ferguson Next

After breaking the bank in his fight against boxing legend, Floyd Mayweather Jr, there has been a lot of speculation about Conor McGregor’s plans for the future. This is why we haven’t seen Conor McGregor betting odds for his next MMA fight.

Over the weekend UFC president, Dana White, gave McGregor fans a reason to cheer, when he announced the Irish fighter will face Tony Ferguson when he returns to the Octagon.

Before the announcement was made, McGregor had teased fans about returning to the Octagon to take on Nate Diaz. Diaz defeated McGregor the first time they met and McGregor won the second fight, which led to fans asking for a rubber match between the two fighters.

McGregor also teased returning to the boxing ring to take on former sparring partner, Paulie Malignaggi. Paulie quit McGregor’s camp while he was training for the Mayweather fight because McGregor’s camp leaked footage of their sparring sessions to make the Irishman look good.

Malignaggi and McGregor became involved in a war or words after the former boxing champion quit the camp. There have also been some fans asking for a fight between the two men.

At UFC 216, Tony Ferguson tapped out Kevin Lee in the third round of their fight to win the interim lightweight title. After the fight, Ferguson told the press that McGregor needs to either accept the challenge or relinquish his lightweight title.

Ferguson also said McGregor was scared of him and doesn’t pose a threat to him, which is why he hasn’t called him out and has nowhere to run.

White was quick to quell any rumors of a McGregor vs Diaz fight, calling it “internet bullshit.” White said Ferguson is the interim champion and McGregor is the champ, so the fight between the two is the one that makes the most sense.

McGregor, who has been on a break since the Mayweather fight, is the former UFC Featherweight Champion and reigning UFC Lightweight Champion. He is also the only UFC fighter to hold belts in two divisions simultaneously, before he was forced to relinquish one of his belts.

McGregor is expected to return to the UFC soon, but there hasn’t been a definite date set and from the looks of things, the fight between him and Ferguson isn’t going to happen this year, if it happens at all.

Even though White expects McGregor to return to the sport that made him who he is today, there are rumors that McGregor might not return to the Octagon after getting his biggest paycheck in the boxing ring.

McGregor hasn’t addressed his future plans, but there is speculation that he might retire from fighting in the UFC because he won’t make anywhere close to the money he made fighting Mayweather. Other rumors have him returning to fight once or twice a year.

White said he spoke to McGregor recently and the Irishman told him he wants to fight again this year but needed some time to blow off some steam. With less than two months left in the year, it seems unlikely that will happen, but if White is being honest about McGregor wanting to fight again, I expect to see him back in the Octagon sometime next summer.
