Dana White: “I offered Nick Diaz the Robbie Lawler fight and he turned it down.”

When UFC 47 was headlined by Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz in 2004:

  • Chuck Liddell had never won UFC gold.
  • Nick Diaz was paid $3,000 to show and $3,000 to win
  • Robbie Lawler had a hairline
  • Conor McGregor was 15 years old
  • I was still in my 20’s

13 years have passed since a 21 year old Robbie Lawler lost to 20 year old Nick Diaz, by KO. Robbie Lawler was hyped up as the next big thing in the UFC, but was taken out by Diaz in spectacular fashion. Diaz talked trash during the entire fight and it was the first time a referee (Steve Mazzagatti) warned a fighter to stop talking. MMA evolved and the fighters went their separate ways. Both have gone on to have Hall-of-Fame careers and a rematch always seemed eminent. Until today.

UFC President Dana White went on the UFC Unfiltered radio show and crushed our welterweight dreams.

“I offered Nick Diaz the Lawler fight and he turned it down. Lawler accepted the fight. Lawler accepted the fight and Nick turned it down. So I’m looking for something else for Lawler right now.”

Why do you think he turned it down?

“I don’t know. They were terrorizing me, saying they wanted a fight! They wanted a fight! So, they wanted to announce it that night at the Sacramento card. Nick was there, it was the right crowd, it was close to his hometown… They wanted to announce it. Robbie Lawler accepted the fight. I called Nick and he turned it down and they’ve been radio silent ever since. I just reached out to them and said, ‘What do you guys think about a fight with Demian Maia?’ and I haven’t heard back from them yet.”

Granted, I don’t think anyone at 170 pounds is eager to jump into the cage with Demian Maia at the moment. He has horrible name recognition, but he’s been absolutely dominating his opponents. No one wants a fight with a guy who can’t sell pay-per-views and on top of that, can dominate them in the cage.

So, now we have 3 top welterweights with no one to fight. How about this? Lawler vs Mike Perry or Lorenz Larkin. Ben Saunders vs Demian Maia. Nick Diaz vs Conor McGregor at a 160 catch weight.

Boom. You’re welcome.
