It’s crazy to think that Brock Lesnar became the UFC heavyweight champion exactly 10 years ago, today. Even crazier is that he took the belt from MMA legend, Randy Couture. I remember vividly where I was, who I was with, and what I was thinking when the two squared off.
I was sitting with former UFC fighter, Gabe Ruediger, in his living room and both of us were sure that Brock had no chance of winning. He certainly didn’t deserve the title shot, as he was 1-1 in the UFC and 2-1 in his MMA career.
Shows how much we knew. Lesnar dropped Randy in the second round with a clubbing punch and then followed up with about 50 hammerfists. I didn’t realize it at the time, but Mario ‘Get em Killed’ Yamasaki was reffing and he does what he does best. He let the fight go about 10 hammerfists too long.
Regardless, Lesnar defied all expectations and walked away as the new UFC heavyweight champion. He would go on to defend the title twice before dropping it to Cain Velasquez almost 2 years later.
